$2500 for any rough Commando, we've seen way more than that recently. Those poor folks overseas would give a left nut for those prices. The choice now is to pick up the bike as they aren't just laying around any more and not going down in price.

It would be a $4500 bike to your door in Australia.
$2500 purchase price.
Road transport $595. (J C Motors)
Sea freight $900.
Tax $250.
Transport within Australia $300 / $1000.
Restored value maybe $11000 to $15000 ?
One reason I elected to buy a restored MKIIa from the USA,as long as you don't get a lemon its all good.

I would say $2500 would be a bargain based on eBay sale prices over the last 6 months.
The 1972 Roadster at $7000 now might be interesting depending on the reserve.

That's a clean bike. I'd be surprised if it doesn't make $10k.

That might pose another question. (or two)
If that Roadster is worth US$10000,what about the MkIIA in question.

If it cost $2500,what is it worth in restored condition and how much might that cost to do 'state side ?
The all to common slippery slope for many, what to do and how far do you go.

It looks to be a bike that would come up as a nice 'rider with a good clean and maybe another $1000 invested ?
It might also be a bike you could spend US$7000 + on and still get you money back.

I think the Mk IIA is about $1000 away from a good rider. I think the other 850 is a little more away. Quite a bit for someone without the corrective parts.

We can talk about worth but a good Norton owner will tell you that they last thing they think about is selling their Commando. We only guess at the value to tell the wives what a great deal they are.

Only time we get $10,000 for a Commando is when it gets put in a sea container bound for Australia. Thanks for the money :D

Jeepers, buy it. If you find another one later that is a better deal, buy it too. Otherwise you got nothing to lose.

PS - If I remember right, you have another tank looking for a home anyway!

Buy it, you'll get a better return on your investment than your 401K

One cannot have too many Nortons, hard as I try I still have 3.

I think you're an idot for not having it in your garage yet. You could crate it up and ship it to Australia and easily double your money.

I'll keep you posted...

Good news, my friend Mike got the nice original bike (picking it up on Saturday). Because I didn't pull the trigger fast enough the guy sold the other one to some lady in CA who wanted both. At least now I don't need to figure out how to fit another bike in the garage...

I'm sure there are plenty more out there. You should buy one that you really have a desire for rather than one available by opportunity. Think you did the right thing.

You are correct.

Thanks Dave for all your help with my first Norton! I have a sense that things will never be the same again! Will post an introduction on the forum soon, now that I'm a bona fide Norton owner.

Hi Dave
Here's the bike after another day of cleaning. Still a little way to go but having great fun.
Cheers!

You need your own thread. And an intro.

Hi Mike T

Hell of a thread,I think you got the pick of the litter allright! I am sure if both bikes were similiar condition,Dave would have had less trouble doing the deal on both. But in the end a good outcome, you have a nice bike to get up to the standard of your T110 Trumpy. You will love the ride once you get the Norton running and sorted.
And Dave can keep on getting his yellow one going.

Still a cheap deal by Australian standards.

Cheers Richard
