All the vetter ones I've seen are frame mount (I own a vetter for commando) where as the one in question is handle bar mount. Did vetter make a bar mount fairing?

ANY resin I use will have to pass the companies engineering application sheet or I won't touch it. The test/trial will be to make a new tank.

what's the story on the mounting hardware? vetter or custom?

thanks for the pix and info. That's the one like on my site exactically

I had never seen that vetter site. I see they did make bar mount fairings.
My vetter is a windammer with built in turn signals. It had honda mounts.
My friend has a windjammer without turn signals. It came with pre made bracketry for commando frame mount.
I will copy his brackets for my fairing. I have some of the stock cut, but haven't done any welding yet.

if you are talking about a vetter mount made for a norton, i'm not aware of any pix out there on the net that shows them, tho i'm quite sure they were made, mounting instructions/paper work would also likely be a first

in case you didn't know about this site
http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/vetter ... _made.html

what model honda is your mount from/for?

most of the vetter type fairings made at that time (there were a buch) bolted up to the vetter mounting brackets/gear

I've Vetter Windjammer and mount to say its more/less a universal type mount for dual down tube frames the sprouts triangulated struts that go back and up and outward some to support horizontal mounting surface on either side that's more/less a bit higher than tank bottom with supplied nylon-ish drilled rectangle blocks to diddle final mount height.

Essentially all fork mounts will have two adjustable struts off bars and another two that bolt to head light mounts to extend bendable slotted back up supports for lower part of fairing. Peel's used wing nuts so would fit it for cold am commutes in then remove it in nicer part of day the game birds [sportsbikes] were out to tease with them then put back on for the chilly return late in day. The bar mount parts can be cheap flimsy tool requiring fiddly or robust sensible tooless expensive, but may not like the screen with the better mount hard ware and I've not been able to find good mount hardware w/o buying a screen I don't like, sheeze. A few years ago fiddling the dinky type bar mounts for winter I din't see one mount elbow resting on speed clock glass so when I banged screen for alignment elbow tapped the glass too hard. Ugh i shouldn't be allowed around mc's.

Got it!!... Here is what the Chemical Industry here in Sarnia is using to coat vessels. valves, tanks, impellers, steam chambers etc. Works for methanol, alcohol and many other chemicals. Data sheet attached.

Cost is about $300 Canadian for a tub, about the size of a large margarine container. Probably enough to do 4 or 5 tanks. Only problem is that it is so thick it needs to be brushed on or putty knifed on. With my tank cut in half I will be able to apply it to the one half than the other. When that dries I hope to use this epoxy to glue the 2 half's together once I make the 3/4 inch lip all the way around the one tank half so it will over lap on the inside.
I haven't had much time to work on it. Spring here and lots to do. Planning on putting house up for sale soon. Need bigger garage!!

:(

"G" by their definition is "suitable for intermittent contact, splashes, etc."

I do not expect to drain my tank at the end of each day.

Prepped and applied well Novalac permanent and strong yet... ugh resilient enough even w/o fibers embedded to be scatter resistant still sealing even though fiberglass resin scattered with fuzzy edge crater on handle bar bend like wet noodle impact. I kind of feel literally that a good layer of Navalac is what prevented Peel IS tank posts from pulling on on many impacts and crashes w/o a rear back up strap. Oh yeah mates well with JBW patches too.

Very interesting thread, I modified my Fastback tank in this thread cafe-commando-build-thread-t8372.html?hilit=caf%C3%A9 and I modified a glass tank I bought on e-Bay for my café racer http://www.pbase.com/jeandr/cafe_racer. Way back when, my brother and I built our own tanks from a clay form onto which we layed fiberglass cloth and resin. At that time, there were no problems caused by ethanol so we used regular polyester resin, now either vynil ester resin or epoxy resin will resist ethanol.

Great project

Jean

Thank you, and great posts of your restoration. Mine will be on hold for a while until I get moved to a new house.

Sorry this stuff doesn't work either. On June 7th I filled the empty container coated in this epoxy with gasoline and I just opened the container and it was peeling everywhere. Nope, back to square one.

Smear the components insides with JBW layer till essentially set up then smear the seams with JBW and let set up to get it booze proof inert up to 500F or so, After Fully set up over some days. Bisphenol-A is a component of JBW and estrogen mimic but pretty much locked up inside so nil to leach like water bottles and food packaging do.

AFAIK there's only two durably ethanol-proof "plastics": HDPE and FKM (which swells but it lasts at least). Both are available as foils, HDPE can be welded and FKM can be glued to form a bladder. Not easy but IMHO there is no real alternative. Every epoxy-based lining will fail sooner or later.

Had a few minutes today so took the next step. Don't laugh. I feel like that family in South Dakota trying to make the stone Mountain Monument of Crazy Horse. They have been blasting away at the rock for 50 years and still not complete, but the mountain is sure a lot smaller.

LOL !!! We have seen magic tricks that begin with a big hand saw so hope yours holds fluids afterwards too. I got in trouble too when I was given a functional carpentry set as a child too.

Merry Christmas to all!!
I have been out of the loop for the past 3 months due to selling my house and buying a new one with a 2.5 car garage. Yeh baby!!
Big shop for bikes and cars.
The garage isn't insulated yet or properly wired but I will work on that over the winter.
II have all my Norton parts stored in the unfinished basement of this house we bought and totally gutted to the studs. I mean new everything. We are about 100 yards from Lake Huron, and out of town a ways. Once I get my garage where I want it I will be putting the Norton back together and finishing a few of the posts or forums I started.

My garage has 30 amp service and a gas line.
I can't wait to set up shop.

Congrats. There's nothing quite like having a decent shop to work in.
