Norton 880 long-term project

Jean -

AT LAST! FCRs installed; also 1-1/2" longer monoshock unit, so now I can keep the big AGM battery for e-start.

Norton 880 long-term project

The bike runs fantastic, but there is no room whatsoever for any kind of air filter. I'm going to have to build a custom airbox using the frame web and downtubes.

I will get the clamps order right away, for this weekend, these manifold boots will work.

Yes, an air filter is a necessity with the alkaline dust that is floating in the air at all times. This is an actual desert in south Texas.

Speaking of air cleaners, have a look at this !
The dust storm covered Sydney and Brisbane on the east side of Oz two weeks ago.

This turned a nearly finished black norton in the garage red, oh and then there was the inside of the house, the windows were open while we were at work.

Looks neat angled like that, I will send new hoses anyway, they are cut and ready. Did you change the jetting and settings?

Jean

I did not change anything, as these should be very close to correct as-is. They will actually be a tad rich for the 850, but just right for the 880 when it's done.

I haven't ordered the other clamps yet, but I will in the next day or two (I'm prepping for a land speed time trials meet this weekend).

Please take lots of pictures, these LSR bikes are pure works of art and they are fast.

"The Texas Mile" at Goliad, TX http://www.texasmile.net in 2 days.

My bike is an AHRMA Historic Production Heavyweight 1969 Triumph T120R Bonneville 650.

Pretty much stock except electronic ignition and no lighting, .020 over on the pistons; that's it.

I set the AHRMA class record at the BUB speed trials in Sept. '08 at 91.948 MPH, now I just want to bump it to anything over "the ton".

Pix, as requested.

This is going to be "it" 'till I get around to building up the 880 engine and then doing the swap with the belt drive primary and Spyke starter, maybe before next May (New Ulm show)...

That pipe bluing looks excellent, to me; it almost matches the paint color. I think it's a classic look. Timing and jetting are resolved, so it's not getting any worse. I could use some Blu-away, but I want to leave it as-is (for now).

GP, your 880 is beautifull ! (I've now got a new screen saver)

Good luck with the bonny, wind resistance must be a major factor ?
Perhaps removing the seat to get lower? Probably against the reg's ?
Maybe swap the leathers for a pair of budgie smuglers ?

Nah, the speed run will be easy to hit 100.

At Bonneville, I still had (2) races at miller, (2) races at Sandia and (2) races at barber to finish the year, so I figured I'd do one "casual" pass, get a record in the books and go home happy. Doofusly (is that a word?) I had installed a mismatched speedo & gearbox, so at a leisurely 5,000 RPM I was running a bit over 70 MPH (indicated), actually almost 92. If I would have known I was almost over the ton, I would have wicked it up to 6,000 RPM and done it without any worries (I had been hitting and holding 7,000 RPM at Daytona, Road America and Grattan with no problems whatsoever).

So, this time, I'll just wind that sucker up to 7,000 and hold it there. Should be between 105 and 110 at least (realistically). No need for extreme measures, and the Historic Production class doesn't allow bodywork.

FOR SURE, i'll have the coolest pit bike (the Blue monoshok Norton)

It seems everyone in Texas that "had a Norton in High School" stopped by my pits this weekend with lots to talk about when they spotted the 'different looking' Blue Norton. Talk about well-received"!Very cool was the fact that it started on the first kick every time I rode it, all weekend. Cold starts are a simple matter of two fist-pumps to prime it with the pumper, and a half-kick on the starter. I'm sure liking this bike...

By the way, the Bonnie's top end jetting and gearing were off, it flattened completely out at 97.048; still, 5 MPH better than at Bonneville!

Forgot to post the beauty shot with the FCRs installed and the rear end properly set up. It's a beaut...

Nice and clean, will use Left foot shift Mark III setup for now-
Front engine steady by Windy Eads (very simple & effective), and all new Mark III adjustable isolastics-

Okay, so it's been a while since anyone's commented on this thread, but I'm looking at different means to control Isolastic side-to-side movement, and I'd like to get away from anything that has to do with shimming and/or adjusting verniers, since they all rely on a fixed clearance to keep things in check. I saw your Windy Eads heim link, and am very interested.
How did it work for you?
Was it just on the front mount?
I figure if I'm going to dig into mine, I want to do it right.
Thanks in advance,
Nathan
