Hello people, I am restoring a '56 Norton, Model 50 350, for a guy who is very unwell. He wants to hand the bike to his son before he succumbs so the clock is kind of ticking. I am more familiar with Triumphs so would welcome the opportunity to network with someone who is across these motorcycles that I can fire questions at, particularly as the machine has been completely dismantled.

Some early questions I have:

Is Andover Norton the best supplier for Norton parts? Links to other recommended parts suppliers would be appreciated.

The tank has paint on chrome and will need to be redone from bare metal. Does anyone have a template or a bunch of close up photographs I can give to the painter?

Is there a paint code for the silver on the '56 model? I'm guessing that shade of silver didn't change much from one machine to another, or one decade to another for that matter.

Andover Norton have a very limited supply of parts for the singles. RGM and, dare I say it, Norvil have a better range. The UK Norton Owners Club also have their own spare parts scheme but, understandably, you have to be a member to use it.

I have no idea of a paint code for the tank but the colours in those days were much less controlled than they are today so there is some latitude in shades of silver. When you say the tank needs to be redone from bare metal, are you contemplating having it re-chromed? If so, you may struggle to find someone that will do it at anything like a reasonable cost, if at all.

The ES2 and Model 50 had quite a few changes between 1954, 1955 and 1956. You need to consult something like Roy Bacons Norton Singles book to try and figure what exact year it is.

do you know how accurate the rebuild needs to be in year terms, otherwise you are potentially making a lot of work ??
