Just purchased a 2016 Commando Sport MKII and wonder what you guys suggest about the following. I'd like to change mufflers so as to get a better & louder sound and I see that AF1 Racing has these Norton Short Open Slip-Ons (which are used on the new Norton Dominator) available for purchase. Also they have Norton De-Cat Crossover Pipes available.

My questions are these:
1) Has anyone installed these Norton Short Open Slip-Ons onto their own 961's and if so how were your results?
2) Do you recommend installing the De-Cat Crossover Pipes when putting on the Short Open Slip Ons (if so why) or is this not needed?
3) Will my 961 need to be remapped if I were to install the above named Norton Short Open SLip-Ons? (I live FAR away from any Norton dealer so this would be an almost impossible task for me to do right now).
Hi caldwelpComing to this discussion late but I purchase a new 2016 Commando Mk II last year and had the dealer install the factory competition mufflers and they remapped the EFI. The difference between the bike with stock mufflers (which of course look great because they look like the old style ones) and the bike with the competition mufflers (which have a shorter length and larger opening and look exactly like the AFI ones...incidently I paid $1000 for both the mufflers and the retuning as a part of my purchase contract)....It was like getting a BRAND NEW BIKE!! The Norton with the short pipies ran better (smoother up and down on engines revs and it was quicker across all power bands) and IT SOUNDS LIKE A NORTON SHOULD SOUND!!
If anyone is considereing whether or not to do this STOP HESITATING AND JUST DO IT!!
Sarge, haven't located a good shop or mechanic here in the North Bay YET! I found a very knowledgeable clasic Norton mechanic (does it in his spare time, not as a business) in Sonoma, CA . The 2016 I bought in Westminister CA and they did the mapping, I think just using factory setting instrucLet's keep in touch as tions.Hi caldwelp
Which dealer did the remapping and which map did they install. I'm just over the hill from you in Sonoma County. Great to hear that all is well after the remap!
Thanks for the response! Ignition coil, plugs, plug wires, Bosch sensors and head bolt torque@1,000miles are all well worth it. Easy to do with no specialty tools needed. Richard-7's manuals are very helpful. Heck, right now is riding weather! Get to it as you find the time. It doesn't all have to be done at once.Sarge, haven't located a good shop or mechanic here in the North Bay YET! I haven't had time to put in the various upgrades that are recommended. I have some of the parts and will probably begin the upgrades as warmer drier weather arrives. As I just finished my relocation back to Northern CA with in the past few months I have been working a fair amount in order to pay off the cost of moving. The difference between a stock 961 and the 961 with competition pipes was AMAZING. It felt like a completely different bike! Let's keep in touch as we 961 owners are a minority here in the North Bay counties. Peter
I've seen the open shorties that most 961 owner have installed when making that change Called AF1 Racing today about what the long open pipes look like they say they couldn't find a picture to send me. I know I've seen an email address for Norton customer support issues in other threads. Does anyone know it offhand?
What map do you run on your Mk2 with shorties and decat pipe ?
I've been in touch with Ollie at Thiel Mortorsports (Germany) regarding their versions of the 961 exhaust. As of three weeks ago they were reworking some fitment issues. Apparently there are variations of the y-pipes to deal with. Still think I'm going to give their version of the shorties a shot.
