New pipes for 2016 961 Commando Sport MKII

Just purchased a 2016 Commando Sport MKII and wonder what you guys suggest about the following. I'd like to change mufflers so as to get a better & louder sound and I see that AF1 Racing has these Norton Short Open Slip-Ons (which are used on the new Norton Dominator) available for purchase. Also they have Norton De-Cat Crossover Pipes available.

My questions are these:

1) Has anyone installed these Norton Short Open Slip-Ons onto their own 961's and if so how were your results?

2) Do you recommend installing the De-Cat Crossover Pipes when putting on the Short Open Slip Ons (if so why) or is this not needed?

3) Will my 961 need to be remapped if I were to install the above named Norton Short Open SLip-Ons? (I live FAR away from any Norton dealer so this would be an almost impossible task for me to do right now).

To me they look like the standard motad shorties. I would say YES need map update.

.....but it says "special order" which may mean AF1 is just the middle man and ordering for you from the factory. In that case, they are not Motads, but Norton manufactured.

These shorties look exactly like Motads.

1. Numerous 961 owners on this forum have installed the shorties with very positive results, both appearance and performance.

2. Depends what you want from an after market exhaust. Just better appearance/exhaust note? Then no need to buy the de-cat crossover pipe.
If you want the maximum performance increase then you will want the de-cat crossover. The difference will not be great though due to the very mild state of tune of the 961, and airbox restrictions.

3. Yes, whether you buy just the silencers or the de-cat crossover too, you will need a remap for the ecu to compensate properly for the reduced back pressure of the new freer flowing exhaust.

Good point.
Probably because Tony would like to keep the visit friendly.
Bringing up those lousy looking silencers Curtis received from Norton might cast a pall on the meeting. :lol:
 
I didn't have the heart to do that other than just drop the hint above. I'm sure the factory hates me enough and my parts order is still not complete.

I am not talking about Tony or the meeting, I am talking about Lex knowing there is a possible issue with his special order!
 
Lexngton we could give you better advice if we knew where you are but your location seems to be missing from your signature!

Sorry bout that joined not to long ago and must have left my location off. I live in Lexington, Kentucky.
 
I have the sport pipes on, they are still quiet long but look good.
I have been thinking to take them to an exhaust expert, have them cut, adjust the internals to reduce the back pressure. (make them louder).
Will this work?
Will I need a re-map?
I think I have read that It's yes to both but just checking.

Depends. Do you still have the catalytic converter or not?
 
If you install the shorty Norton or Motorad slip on, you will need to remap the ECU. Regardless where you live, here in the states, you can contact a dealer and ship your ECU to them for remapping. All you need to do is identify what pipe you have ordered. Also note that the maps provided by the dealers are for pipes that are authorized by Norton.
 
If you purchase the shorty pipe as a Norton shorty or Motorad shorty, you will need to remap the ECU to accommodate the freer flowing exhaust. All US dealers have the mapping software. For the Commando there is a standard map and one they call Aftermarket map. You will need the have your ECU remapped with the aftermarket map if you choose to install the shorty pipes.
 
All they due is download a pre programmed map, there is no mapping software such as something that could create a new map on a dyno. I think it is just your terminology that is throwing me. All Norton dealers have this capability not just the 2 you mentioned!
