NEW NORTON ATLAS MOTORCYCLE

If Norton were to be taken serious as motorbike producer, they should not limit the production to 250 of these bikes.

I don’t know Tony, perhaps Rob will chime in next week (they’re ‘all hands on deck’ at the show this week).

Are you concerned about fitting panniers and covering them up?

If so, a chap was discussing fitting panniers to Simon Skinner at the show and Simon never mentioned any concerns. So I’m kinda thinking they’re only decorative.
As far as I know, they are decorative only.

We are a small producer who hand build all of our motorcycles. Therefore if we released them unconditionally, we would just struggle to meet demand and it would do us more harm than good.
In the future we will have greater capacity to manufacture, but we never intend to become huge.

I rather enjoy the exclusivity.

Yes, I am also glad they are happy with smaller numbers of bikes. I wonder what % of sales of the Scramblers will go overseas, most will be UK I guess unlike the 961 which I think has an 80% export figure. I think I mentioned that I went on my local (Northants) DGR ride and probably 85% of bikes were new Triumphs (they get a bit boring to look at after you have looked at 160 of them). Some great old BMW's and a couple of old Commandos, a Norvin and a lovely Triton, but out of nearly 200 bikes, I was the only 961. I like that. I have a V7 Guzzi and I would have been one of about 3 Guzzi's there. I suppose thats also why I got an Alfa recently. I appreciate smaller numbers and attention to detail (no Alfa jokes please). Long live Norton, may they survive on smaller numbers but make spendid "British" bikes.

Nigel, how many of your Superlight are they taking orders for initially, was it 50. Do you think most will be UK or will there be export demand for this and the Atlas.

I don’t remember the number WR.

It’s going to be a low number though, and let’s be honest, the price will limit the market somewhat.

Norton except quite a few to go to race teams too.

So, overall, it’ll be a rare site on the roads me thinks.

And I don’t expect to come across too many on track days. It’d be fun though !

Will you be fitting 961 Cali handlebars after a few weeks of riding it though, that would definately differentiate you from the limited number LOL.

I would be worried taking it on a track, one spill and all that carbon flying all over the shop. I was talking to Clem at the show and we were fondly remembering our Honda MB 50's. Turned my headlights off back in the 80's to secretly overtake a mate on his FS1E, acomplised that ok but flipped it when I hit a bend and buggered the fairing. Had to do without one for the next year, that lost me a couple of mph and left me with a scar on my left leg.

Guzzi, oh I don't want to think about that, I have only done 2500 miles on her since 2013 and spent a bit on several mods. So not ready yet but was tempted by the Aerial Ace (they make 25 bikes a year)

We’re do you draw the line though?

Sure, if it goes down there’ll be lots of CF getting damaged.

But that’s the same whether it goes down at Mallory Park or the Oxford ring road!

The only way to ensure it’s not damaged would be to not use it at all.

Can’t see the fun in that...!

I wonder how they will do at racing with 106 HP going against something like a 675 which has 128 in standard roadgoing form?
Will the race version be a much higher output?

Don't get me wrong 106 HP will be lots of fun on the road, just not enough for the TT, which the article claims Norton is going to go after.

675 etc is in a different class Glen. Check out the Superlight thread, someone posted class details there.

Even so, I think the SL compares well with most modern 600s in terms of power to weight ratio.

Right, looks like they might have a better shot at that one than with the Superbike class they have been running .

New Norton Kids on the block presented by Henry Cole during his Norton Special programme last night. My wrists and back would not thank me for a Superlight but nearly all my bits are lusting over a Ranger.

Cool photo. Curious...what is the seat height? Looks a bit high for my 31" inseam. I can't do the Beemer GS nor the Duc Multistrada.
