New Norton 650 Superlight

Wow FE, I thought you had a smaller shed, you got rid of the RNineT, is the 850 out the door to make room. I am guessing you got some bikesure insurance quotes on the stand and spent some time on upgrading the security of the shed/bikes. I was there today also, you had finished your lusting by the time I got there. It was gorgeous I have to say. Saw its big brother 2.00pm start up, blimey, drew huge crowds and what an impressive roar,be needing some ear plugs.

The looks are amazing but anything less would have been disappointing considering the venue. If Norton survives and prospers it will be on the shoulders of the Commando modern and classic. Just that plan, just that simple. Nice work Fast Eddie.

Superlight.
That's what your wallet is after purchasing.

Well yeah, I’m gonna have to put more hours in at work that’s for sure!

But, just for perspective, it’s several £1000s cheaper than a Domi Naked...

Funny how we justify shit to ourselves innit ?!?

No I’ve not looked at insurance yet!

Yes, the BMW went a while ago, nevertheless, I’m still gonna have a rather cramped shed when the SL arrives. If I get creative with layout, I think I’ll be OK. But put it this way... any thoughts of Harley ownership are now firmly out of the question !!

Re the noise on open mega’s: At the moment I’ve ordered mine with a proper race pipe end can that brings it under the 105 dB required for most U.K. circuits.

The titanium open mega looks stunning, I’ve not heard a twin yet, I guess it’ll sound amazing too, but I think I’d be uncomfortable riding it on the road like that where I live, and I wouldn’t be allowed onto the tracks that I frequent. So I won’t be investing in an open system IF it’s a dedicated system.

If the same titanium system can be used and the end can / mega easily interchanged, then I’ll have to reconsider...

Surely it should be in the living room at least !

I actually have permission to put a bike in ours but it has to be a 77 silver jub Bonnie as we met as a Jubilee party, not bought one yet.

Just buying it was pushing my luck rather far with HWMBO... if I tried the living room option I’d have an even bigger shed space problem... cos I’d be sleeping in it ...!

Anyway, stopping faffing about and buy that Jubliee Bonnie... export spec is the one to have IMHO...

I’d try this first, or if u really want 1977 stuff there is always Star Wars clobber

Great value for money alternative to the V4 I’d say , Is it overall similar size wise to the V4 ? ,& when u have ur build slot Nigel, lend the build team a digital camera to record the assembly I’m sure they will oblige.

Well done Nigel - when are you expecting delivery? I was also at the NEC yesterday and had a good chat to Rob & one of the other lads. By mid-afternoon they had taken 10 orders for various bikes that day - there were loads of people sitting on the 961s.

I’ll try ref the camera but, I’m thinking they might be a tad busy though, hopefully they’ll squeeze in a few build shots for me.

June / July next year was the estimate. The ‘party line’ was that they’re not expecting too many delays, the V4 has been badly delayed, whilst the design was confirmed and tweaked and generally made sure it’s right, and the supply chain sorted out, etc. Now those are set up, the 650 range will bennefit, and should not be delayed.

I’ll let you know next June / July...

The SL sure has many trick pieces to catch the eye.
I love the countershaft sprocket "cover".
Not much of a cover, but a wonderful little bit of sculpture.

Funnily enough Fred that’s one bit I’m not too keen on. Looks like they were trying a bit too hard there IMHO and a simple carbon cover would have been lighter, cheaper to produce, and to my eyes at least, would have looked better.

But I guess I’ll just have to get used to it !

The sprocket cover looks to me to be someone strutting their stuff with a CNC machine.
Cleaning chain spooge off that is what I see.

Chain spooge...?!

You need to think more ‘pampered race bike’ than ‘commuter bike’ Dutch...

There won’t be any spooge build up to worry about...!

Here’s a “life lesson” from my experience –

I own/ride only what gives me passion and that usually starts out with the best intensions.

At some point the “honeymoon” will end and I’ll find myself with glazed eyes thrashing it (her?) to the limits. In the warm evening afterglow, I’ll be cleaning off the spooge and reassuring that I’ll not be so rough next time.
