retarded

Another argument for never install a camshaft by the factory markings , but time it properly .

( ànd advancing it some ..)

From what I have heard, retarding a cam gives a bit more horsepower and a little less torque. So, everything else being equal, you gain a little power as the cam chain wears. Dan.

How does that work? Horsepower is a function of torque and RPM. Reduce torque at a given RPM and horsepower will be reduced. HP=(TxRPM)/5252

ugh, retarded intake valve closing only helps the very top end when ram velocity working, otherwise takes some grunt CR out of lower range. Retarding ignition off optimal d/t chain slack would also tend to lower response. Likely not a constant retard but whipping back and fork with chain slack then tension. IF only there was another pretty ole engine face to marry w/o so many warts and quirks.

What about a longer chain with tensionr below the run? Could put air in to pump up. Maybe just a roller on a spring lever.

That would only happen if the rest of the motor was tuned for a cam with more retarded timing. ie- the cam was too far advanced to begin with.
If the cam is installed at it's optimum timing then retarding the timing is going to make a loss every time. Jim

Com just out interest, I used to supply the new Norton cam chain until I fell out over
payments and attitude.

I have heard there are some problems with the chain and tensioning.

It is a very small chain similar but not identical to 219, if you need any just let me know.

I will keep that in mind but from what I have seen so far I don't see any reason to use anything but the heavy duty chain to keep the cam in time. I do very few standard rebuilds. Most of the work I do is on high performance or one-off stuff.

I suppose price would play into this but I'm not usually one to cut corners to save a couple bucks when it comes to my bike. I like things that last. That's why my daily rider is a 35 year old Norton and my daily driver is a 1967 Mercedes. Jim

I aggree.

I also do Merc cam chains at a fraction of dealer price, and they are correct.

Andy,

That was funny. Maybe no humor intended, but nonetheless....

I didn't think it was funny. I have 3 Mercs that are going to be due for chains one of these days. Jim :)

This is a great thread, and an exciting upgrade for our bikes. Jim count me in for a modified shoe and the heavy duty chain, I send mine back as soon as I can. Cj

Ok, I will put you on the list. Jim

That's what I was thinking when I said it was funny, that not only your choice of motorcycles, but your choice of cars would be in need of cam chain replacement. Funny was probably not the best choice of words.

Well I didn't think it was funny because I have to buy the chains and work on a car. Jim

I have the second batch of chain tensioners ready to ship. I also have the heavy duty chains that I am selling only with the
tensioners at this time. If you are on my list and I haven't contacted you let me know.
Or if you want one send me a PM. They are going fast. Jim

New hydraulic timing chain tensioner.

Glad to see you're busy and all your shit isn't floating away. I was gonna put some miles on my rebuilt engine before installing your tensioner, hopefully that will stretch the new chain enough. Should I just send the shoe for exchange?

I have been wondering about floods as well. And here I thought Colorado was in the mountains. Has FEMA included Pueblo in their flood maps yet? We just got designated as having a 4% chance of being swept off the face of the earth during a 30 year span (of a house mortgage). This because FEMA has not done a study of the area (it says so right on the flood map) but decided since there is water here that we should be punished for building near it. But I digress...

Somehow I missed the advantage of the heavy duty chain over the standard chain. Or is it really more a benefit for high performance builds?

If you want to send the shoe I will exchange it. I can send a HD chain at the same time.

If you are using the tensioner with a stock chain, the shoe you have should fit with no issues once the chain is "broken in".

I'm down in Southern Colorado. We just get to watch all the stuff from up north float by as it washes down the Fountain creek. Jim

Russ, The advantage is it does not stretch rapidly like the stock chain does -so the cam stays in time. I did some measurements a few posts back.

Pueblo is high desert -hot and dry. The flooding has been close to the foothills. Jim
