New 106 jets, needle ~ still running rich

Hello all;

Just to clarify a few points;

I dismantled and cleaned both carbs prior to installing new 106 needles and jets (from Walridge) and also ensured that the slides were fitted properly and hit the bottom. Ports are clear and cables are working properly.

I currently have the cone filters off and can feel the slide at the bottom of the stroke and the point at which the idle screw engages the slide.

I'm now pondering the possibility that it may be my start up technique, during which I tickle the carbs until I see a hint of fuel seeping from the top of the tickler button (not sure if this is the correct terminology but the GF likes it). Perhaps I am flooding the cylinder at this point, causing issues from the get go? Starting typically involves a shot of ether on cold mornings.

So, more fettling.

Your starting technique is just fine but should not need ether. You can't flood the carbs too much so it doesn't matter if you see just a bit out of the tickler or a bit extra. What you see there is the overflow after the carb is as full as it can get using the tickler. Most likely Walridge sent you the correct parts. Is the spray tube cut straight across or at a slant?

Just read original post about being just the left cyl. Someone made mention of this I believe. Worth checking to make sure left carb's needle did not push up through it's little spring clip.

Hi there

I had a similar problem on my 750 which runs on a single amal. The right hand cylinder would start missing and backfiring after 40-50 miles and a new set of plugs would cure the problem. I played around with jets needles and slides to no avail, and finally found the coil on the right hand side was packing up when it got warm as these coils have been known to do. I replaced the old coils with a single dual output version and the problem was cured. It might be worth a wee try to swap the coils across and see if the fault changes sides!

Good idea, a single carb'd twin with this "one side rich" problem sure can't be carb related. Likewise if both carbs are in fact fine but one side is plug fouling rich the first thing we all think of is one of the carbs is as fault. Switching coils is a good idea and easy too. But you've still got that high idle issue....Baby steps, baby steps. :)

You know my approach now is to go and buy a set of Premiers and be done with it. By the time you dick around with new slides new jets new floats
and probably reboring the carb body it is just smarter to go all new. Ive done this for the last three bikes and it was install adjust and be happy.
Im not at the Fast Fred level of tossing money at the bike but at this point in life it is looking a lot better than in the past!
