I drained the "Honey Pot" after every days ride.

Fuel mileage @ 5th gear cruising
70-75mph ~ 43.5 MPG
80-85mph ~ 45.5 MPG
63-68mph ~ 53 MPG ( Don't Doubt it ! - This is the proverbial sweet spot ! )

OMG all that oil on the back rim would do my head in
Is it straight from the airbox? ;)

looks like it`s off the chain …………….

I put chainsaw oil on my chain ( I can`t see how the wax stuff gets inside the chain even at the end of a ride when it`s warm ) and it does throw oil all over the side of the wheel and even on the tyre .

At least the right side of the wheel wont rust

Hey Tony looks a great ride , was it a bit of a shocker when the rear hugger split, loud noise , scape ,judder ? Ur speed at the time ?

Yes , That's Chain lube flinging off. I Did not know (felt nothing ,heard nothing , shorties are loud) when the hugger split earlier in the ride. I picked up a stone or stick on the rear tire ? Any how you can be quite a gas miser when you want to on the 961. You just need to slow it down to say 65MPH and gas mileage really jumps up ! Also its somewhat more comfortable for the long haul as you know Richard ! A special thanks to Richard Pearce for the Coast to Coast Commando motivation , and to David and Richard Coote for help getting my bike sorted out. There is a lot more to talk about , how to prep for a long ride and such. I also want to give a shout out to the others that joined me on the ride : Mike , Chad , and Dave thanks great time guys !

How many days away Tony ,& what mileage did u put on, most in one day etc? Were the panniers enough for u or did u take tank bag aswell ?

Left Saturday , returned next Saturday . (7nights). About 2000 miles total . Most miles in a day a little over 400 . Some of the pictures show a full load , Saddle bags , tank bag and tail pack. With the rain suit and tools and chain lube and other things not much room left in the side bags for clothes. Clothes and shaving kit went into the tank bag and tail pack. We put on almost 700 miles in the Deals Gap area . We did the Dragon Tail 4 times east to west and west to east.
I would like to discuss how to increase the comfort with leg cramping etc. How you cope and you are taller than me. I need more seat height to allow less leg bend. Also the reach to the bars is still a bit to far for long distance for me.

This is how the bike is packed for my trip.View attachment 5465
I stop regularly when doing high miles, I’ve got bar risers like u,my seat padding Is still ok now after 14,500miles , prob gel fill it in winter or buy the new Norton seats , i have the pro 717 handle bar grips with have gel in ,but I never get too much leg cramp anyway.

Things I did to my 961 in preparation for my trip :

Rear sprocket to 47T (3t smaller)
Sport Touring Tires front and rear with new inner tubes
1in handlebar risers
Fork tubes pulled up 2.5mm
Suspension Gaiters Front and Rear
Air Hawk seat cushion
Installed enough practical luggage space
All of the other 961 fixes like new sensors , foam , tie rap fuse box and electrical connections greased
Shake down runs before the trip to know bike fuel range and get in shape

I have been through hard rain with no issues . Don't be afraid to take your 961 on a trip , just prepare .
