That is a lovely job, Jean. Sorry if I missed this in the earlier posts, but what was the source of the alternator? Thanks.

Ken

The alternator is from a Kubota stationary engine, the same is used on Suzuki 1200s, but bet it's a lot more expensive than what I paid for mine ($135).

And tanks everyone for the comments :D

Congratulations Jean. Be assured your bike is an example of why the thekneeslider is so popular. Good on ya for documenting the build so well with great photos too! Seeing this prompted me to visit your photo blog again. You did a lot of work on this bike. Praise, pride and satisfaction are well deserved.

This is a very well engineered bike and one of the reasons I joined this site :D

I do like modded bikes just a small question the exhaust manifold was it machined out of solid or fabricated :?:

Fabricated, I machined a ring which was welded to the pipe, the next one I do I will make it out of solid, only to get a better sealing surface and It would probably be stronger too.

Congrats Jean,

I'll have to take a look tonight. I just came back from getting my knees cold for lunch and I plan to go fro another ride this afternoon.

Thanks for sharing your build with us, I can only hope to someday have the skill and ability to do something like your bike. What is your next project going to be? I would really like to see it, Thanks again, Chuck.

I will redo my Commando as a café racer too, but more rideable than this one. Most likely with oil in frame, a lighter rear wheel with a better brake, either a big Grimeca drum up front or monster disks. Spoked wheels of course and as few wires visible as possible. I may go for a QPD electric starter or devise my own. A nice docile motor, no need for high compression, just an easy to start, either by kick or button, lump. I would love to have bigger wheels, at the minimum 19" but 21" would be cool, this may mean a new swing arm, so a monoshock "à la GrandPaul " is not out of question.

That's the highest compliment I've had in a LONG time, maybe EVER.

Soon, I'll have the third iteration built, and within 90 days I'll have all three track-tested for performance. Only significant consideration is that all three of mine are inverted-fork equipped, with very "tight" steering angles due to modern fork yoke geometry.
