MK II Brake Upgrades on a Budget

My rear brake on the MK3 is strong enough that the rear wheel will sometimes slide when using engine braking and the brake combined, moderate brake pedal pressure.
Ive had that happen a few times, especially if I haven't ridden that bike for awhile and have to relearn things.
Light pressure is all that is needed on the rear brake.
With heavy pressure it will lock the rear at speed in an emergency braking situation. Again, best to avoid locking the wheel in an emergency stop, but that's what ABS was invented for!

The original MK3 had the same discs and calipers front and rear. In my experience, the back brake on the MK3 is plenty strong for the job, the front just isn't for my application.
With the Madass brake fitted the braking is balanced more like a modern bike with much greater brake strength at the front. It's obviously not as powerful as a big twin rotor brake, however those are designed to haul a Sportbike down from 170 mph or more.
The Madass brake is more than enough for Commando road speeds.

Even the standard brake is fine if you take it easy.

Mine is a MK II and the rear OEM drum brake was more like a suggestion than a brake. The RGM high friction MZ Gold linings are a great improvement.

My last bike was a 475# hot rod '64 Panhead with a Superglide front end and disc brake. The rear hydraulic drum brake was very effective and gave great feedback on when one was approaching rear wheel lock-up.

I got to use both brakes hard last night when 2 deer appeared out of the dark in the roadway. I hauled Trixie down from 60 MPH to a near standstill quite quickly. Great feel from both brakes. I also like the modern LED headlight which contributed to the safe outcome.

I'm now happy with the headlight and brakes that I have.
