Ever since Jerry put the cap on "Donald Trump seems....." I've found the pub a little boring. I've never chimed in myself but start my day with a cup of coffee and Access Norton. I'm starting to miss the banter on Trump, Hillary, Brexit and such.

Two ways to start an argument ......

Speak of politics or religion.

This Forum and our love of Nortons should bind us together in a brotherhood; politics and religion drive us apart.

While I agree 100% with Slick , you don’t have to look hard on a Sunday morning to find buildings full of folks who think otherwise .... lots of religion in those buildings too !! besides the politics

The people in those buildings share a belief, the problems arise when people disagree on the “correct” religion!
Same with politics - except some within parties are revolting ..... they also disagree.

Over on TriumphRat forum, they have a pretty strict no politics rule. I think it works pretty well really. Once people get nasty with each other bickering about political views, it's quite difficult to then deal sanely with them again in other threads.

Yup , no politics or race on our EastCoastDucatiClub forum .... makes for pleasant spot to drop in and catch up .... most controversy so far was a dues issue ....imagine !

We tend to be honest on our forums about our bikes, cars, family etc but when politics is involved and if its coming out of a politians mouth then it all goes down hill from there, so many lies and untrufts, we here in Aussie land are going to the polls in a few weeks and both major parties are tiring to win us over with more money in our pockets and for everything and some promises that were made last election that was never met and repromises etc, and of course who ever wins will break a lot of those promises, everyone is getting sick of it as its all about the party and not the people, and of course they are so good at it that they now lie to the people and they believe in themselfs even when caught out, so really its a wise move to curtail any politics from our forums and everyone will have a different opinion on any politics.

Yes, this is exactly what I miss, different opinions. Not just Trump but different countries. I've had to google what's a Pommy what's a REGO what's a MOT. The only pub I've ever been to is "Lucky Baldwins" in Pasadena, which probably doesn't count. But this section is called the "Pub" and even on Norton night I never heard anyone discussing the booboo they got while wrenching their Norton. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I vote for EGG BOY !

I learn from and enjoy political discussion and the availability of it here is a part of why I participate here

I do deplore the incivility that some bring to it though.

That said, incivility is a choice and it reflects back on those who make that choice. The answer is not censorship of politics per se, rather it is to admonish or otherwise moderate those who choose to indulge in such negative and uncivilized conduct

To ban political speech anywhere is lazy cowardice and submission to the worst among us

I think Mr Doe strikes the right balance.

“When men differ in opinion, both sides ought equally to have the advantage of being heard by the public; when Truth and Error have fair play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter.”
— Benjamin Franklin

We may disagree on politics but if we can agree on motorcycles, we can get along.
I do enjoy learning a bit about foreign politics here. Direct your anger at the politicians and not the posters. There is a nice mix of intelligent and well informed people here whose opinions are worth hearing.

I was recently reading a book titled 'The Search for a Moral Compass' The upshot of it was that morality and altruism come from the collective. My wife bought me Hayek's 'Constitution Of Liberty' which presents the case for individualism. However my feeling is that individualism is not a good survival strategy. During WW2, Allied soldiers were POWs in Changi Prison under Japanese control. The British maintained their class system. The Americans were individuals. The Australians had their support groups up and running ( - nobody gets left behind ) . The Australians survived better than any. There seems to be national differences in mindsets. Americans are wealthier than Australians or British.

And then there was “King Rat” and “Milo Minderbinder” .... .... I had an Uncle in a Japanese prison camp during WW2 ... he worked daily in a very height challenged mine, impossible to stand upright .... he made a diary ,don’t remember him identifying many nationalities of his fellow inmates , he did live in a shelter with other Canadians though .... a buddy smuggled the diary out

Craig,
It's not just owning Nortons that binds us all together
I also had an uncle in a Japanese prison camp, and my dad's sister married a Canadian soldier who had been stationed over here. When he came back (unscathed) they went to live in Canada.
Joe was a great bloke, a mechanic by trade, he told us how every winter they would be completely snowed in.He was 6'8" tall, I always wonder how the hell he evaded bullets in combat !

Trump will make America do a rethink. That might be good for everyone. Australians are becoming Americans. We used to be twenty years behind America and learned from their mistakes. But the web has changed that. I am of two minds about neoliberal individualism, but our whole economy is now based upon it. Every pronouncement which comes out of the Australian Productivity Commission is built around that ideology.

I just hope the "rethink" doesn't get him a second term. He's far and away (IMO) the worst President in the 51 years we've lived in the US since emigrating from the UK.

^^ and here is the problem with debates like this. We get people posting their "I don't like him, so he's far and away the worst" statements. How much you dislike someone doesn't make them bad at the job they are doing, nor would how much you like a person make them good at their job...

Discuss their policies and the results, discuss the relative benefits and shortcomings of their policies, but discussing how YOU feel is not a metric by which any president should be judged. A real criticism says, Policy "A" is wrong because..., and I think Policy "B" is a better idea... Tell us why he's WRONG, not how you feel.

To put it in Norton terms, it would be like saying that Jim Comstock, Jim Schmidt, or Dyno Dave's norton work with commandos wasn't any good because I don't like any of them... Is my dislike a valid criticism? A: Of course not... (btw, all those guys are awesome. They've all helped me with my commando. The above comment is an example)

Well said................and the main reason I try to steer clear of threads such as these. More often than not an opinion is base on emotion....not fact or policy.
