Yes, new good quality, nylon lined cable lubed with light cycle oil & greased at the twist grip. Nice smooth pull and a resounding snap when letting go the grip except when splashing through heavy rain. Steel tank and no sign of gum or resin on the slide. I don't like dangly cables so normally I have it run forward over the top of the front brake lever, but to eliminate that from the equation now, have it dangling down ready to snare pheasants.

David

a nylon lined cable is asking for trouble
yes i know a lot of people never have any problem with it
a nylonlined sleeve should never be oiled nor greased because oil /grease make the plastic/nylon swell and cause sticking
i make all my cables myself (because i never build std bikes/carbs/frames) and always use nonlined sleeves , btw make sure you buy good innercables for your throttlecables . when bying put a knot in them , pull them up until the knot is +/- 5mm in dia , then undu the knot and the cable schould be unmarked,no kink in it . if there is a kink throw it away because that is what will happen in use

i also put a steel bended bit of threaded tube on top of my carbs , if there is room

Yes, the 45 degree out the top of the carb was essential when I ran the VM36. I even had to cock the carb ever so slightly for best functionality.

The VM 36 on my 850 had the problem of the throttle sticking open on occasion.... made for an interesting ride. Turns out the fitting on the top of the carb was for another Mikuni model and there was a slight interference with the frame. I changed it to the 45 degree fitting and never had a problem after that. Something else came to mind. I had an issue with the slide not being able to slide freely to the stop. These needles are quite soft and mine was slightly bowed. You couldn't see it but with a roll on a flat surface it was there. I trued it up and all was well again.

I had this problem with the 36 mik on the 850 with a scary moment wide open in third heading towards a rock wall and she didnt throttle off, luckily the brakes worked that day, but let me tell you, I had to visit brown gouge that day! I found a splash of two stroke oil in the tank occasionally helps to release the slide and probably all the vibration over the years has increased the clearance maybe and touch wood, it hasnt reoccured since.
