I was fastest in practice Friday but Saturday morning my freshly rebuilt motor with new forged pistons and Bore-tech hardened liners broke a rod when I was flat out in 4th gear, 100+mph (it's a 5 speed); without any warning the rear wheel locked and I fishtailed down the track, kept it upright somehow and ran it into the generous turn 1 sand trap. Turns out one of my custom made rods had apparently reached the end of it's race life. Very expensive race motor (Maney cases, Maney barrels, trick crank, etc. etc. was completely destroyed. The rod blew out the bottom of the cases and actually hit directly on the frame cross tube with such force it bent it outwards and left a finger deep dent in it.

Doug

I know you must be choked but at least you are not hurt. I am 1 year on from doing my Maney engine & no closer to getting it back on track. I have no damage in relation to you.
What rods were you using?
I have Corillo in the big engine & standard polished rods in the 750. The Corillos change the feel of the engine.

I hope your season is not over.

all the best Chris

Doug,
Absolutely terrible, what a mess, I feel really sorry for you. On the good side you're unhurt. You've entertained us for years with your racing exploits and kept the Commando flag flying high and will, I'm sure, for years to come.

I don't know if this suggestion is against forum rules. LAB, would it be possible to arrange a method to allow us to chip in a few quid to help Doug out?

Cash.

I'm not quite sure how that could be done through the forum, but if Doug has a Paypal account you could perhaps send a donation through Paypal?
I suggest you PM Doug and ask, if he doesn't respond?

Glad you're OK, amazing you kept it upright

Sorry to see such a purposeful race engine in this state :(

I notice it's the rod furtherst away from the oil supply...as normal , can the timing side rod disperse all the oil and starve the other? As most rod failures are drive side mayby some IMPROVED method of oil feed to that side ? or i am i talkin tosh here?
Other than that all i can say..."thats racing" carry on Doug.

That's not going to buff out! :(

No problems with back pressure either!

But it does give you the opportunity to build a better motor.

I know guys that race ,spend a small fortune on entries and travel. Blew up their new motor in the first race at Cadwell (sidecar) nobody went near the driver for about an hour ,till he had cooled down. He laughs now , at the time he was fuming , but he said that's what happens when you go racing . They are at Darnley Moor this weekend so I guess it hasn't put them off.

I recon Doug (I've watched your videos) MacRae will have a similar attitude to things.

Sorry if off topic just delete!

Well Doug,
I was thinking about approaching you anyway but that is such a hard luck story that I would like to be the first to help you.

I would like to donate a Fullauto Technologies head to you. Please contact me to organise delivery.

I think that is brilliant.....of course, that is, as long as it is not mine ;-)

Well done.

But you do know Doug may want to do a big valve job on it don't you :-)

Dougie,

This is a gift from the heavens.

Ken, you are a good man, and your product wins races. I know firsthand.

?????!!!!!!!!! Wow, that is a very generous offer, I most certainly deeply appreciate it and I will be contacting you. I am very excited to try out one your heads, I have heard all sorts of great things about them. Yay Fullauto!

What rods were you using?

My experiment with using one off custom machined rods is most definitely over, I am in the market for some Carillos now.

Although generous of you, there's probably someone out there with less money who could use one more.

Thank you for your mean spirited comment. Well, I'm just about to head out nightclubbing in my Ferrari Enzo ('91 VW transporter). Oh sorry. I mean go to bed early to get up in the morning to go to work in my dull, dreary boring job so my family can eat. How many homeless people have you taken in for a meal this week?
