Mercedes chain for Norton primary

The Chainman's main method of selling is by attending the the swapmeets each weekend, he has a fully kitted out enclosed trailer with all the chains and tools. Best way to get hold of him mid week is to call.

I have bought from Jason the chain by email contact without issue
Maybe keep trying, could just be a temporary issue

It's a standard IWIS chain, so you should be able to order it from a US supplier. I did this not long ago, have a box with 5m of chain sitting in my workshop now. Seems to be the minimum length, enough for something like 2.5 Norton chains.
I simply did it this way to avoid the high postage fees and the ridiculous fees charged by the local tax people, which effectively doubles the price paid to Jason.

UK delivery, timing chain £26 + £3 p&p. drive chain £48 + £6 p&p
Not bought the primary chain yet.
Drive chain has 105 and a half links, think I need to remove 4 links but I have not finalised positions yet. Better having too much than not enough!

AN responded, said the use IWIS for primary and final chain, do not use it for timing. I don't know more than that. I know there are different grades of Iwis with JWIS being a top grade. Will try calling Jason next week.

Ouch ! Just fitted the new J. The chain man Iwis timing chain to my 2 nd . motor build . Any reason stated as to why it should not be fitted ?

We had samples of the IWIS timing chain from their UK facility in the Midlands, it fitted well and was good quality so we ordered a load. However, when they delivered the timing chains they did not fit, as to why, they could not really explain.

I tried to fit an Iwis timing chain to an 11 tooth sprocket for another use, the big pins limit the radius it will fit and it would not stay on the sprocket and was lifting. Possibly if its on its top tolerances its may not go round a Norton timing sprocket.

Let me clear this up. I wrote it poorly. They simply said they do not stock the Iwis timing chain, did not say "don't use it". I have installed several from Jim Comstock with no problems. I would be happy to use them again. No idea why AN had problem with them.

Are IWIS timing chains much heftier? I could have sworn that my chain (.375, 38 Pitches) purchased from Old Britts in 2014 was beefier than the original but maybe I'm misremembering. I did keep the original tensioner as I was told the newer ones tend to lose their rubber pads. (sorry to steer the topic from primary to timing)

The IWIS chain is probably the best you can buy, but how much better than an stock type? I don't (ever) slam my shifts nor down shift at high RPMs I have no issues with the OE type. I have always wondered if torquing the rotor induces stretch?

I would caution against using any chain that requires shortening unless you know what you are doing. Too tight creates heat and unnatural ware, too lose and you risk rear wheel lock or, at the least, major damage to the primary chain case, possibly the engine.

Best.

Sorry to continue the derailment, but as I recently found out during my 961 refresh (read all about it here https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/wtf-now.34843/) IWIS actually make two kinds of chain suitable for timing chain. Perhaps AN received bush chain rather than the normal roller version?

Yes, they are the simplex version of the Merc duplex timing chain with the pin and bush sizes maxed out on dimensions and materials. This gives the lowest wear rates possible. Even with The Chainman you must specify big pin, Andy was so used to dealing with cheap vintage guys you had to persuade him to up spec to the big pin version. Hopefully Jason knows the Access Norton guys want to pay extra for the big pin.

Agree, any IWIS chain no matter what the construction is from what I have seen far better quality than anything that was fitted originally. If it fits use it.
We see quite a bit of chain here, manufacturers often send it to us to look at. Much of it modern sealed motorcycle chain which is not much use to us, and none looks any better than the IWIS chain.
