I’m with you Ralph, plenty of other things to worry about before sludge becomes priority #1.

AFAIK modern oil has additives that deliberately keep particles and ‘sludge’ in suspension so that it stays in the oil until it is safely removed and captured by the oil filter.

Hence the increased benefit / necessity of a decent paper filter these days.
 
When I found Dave's solution (after I had done the job) I did see the advantage of smaller holes working together to provide enough flow whilst acting as a kind of filter for debris but in the same way there has been a small sump created as well. The flow created should keep it clear, hopefully :)

Agreed, I don't find sludge in the big filter plug when I change oil. I guess the sludge, if it was going to settle any where, would be more of a problem front left of the engine where there will always be a pool because of the forward tilt of the motor and being on the sidestand, it would be a consideration if I ever did another though.
