Lost Clutch.

Well, I am glad you found a problem.

However, I am confused how "...... I take off and it's fine I get to second gear OK but when I attempt 3rd I lost all clutch and all tension on the cable. I pushed it the couple of blocks back to the house and back on the rack and magically I had clutch again. " ..... this can happen with a worn spline on the center body ..... particularly the part about lost tension on the cable.

I am sure when you rebuild the clutch and get the stack height correct, all will be well. Keep us informed.

Well guys I found the problem. I inner spline of the 063979 Clutch Center was worn smooth. So it was not turning with the sleeve gear when kicked over. Thanks loads for the help.

Good find... Sorry about my incorrect advise earlier...

Never heard of or seen a clutch hub issue like that . Seen lots of notched ones by the plates digging into it though. Well you found it so it looks like you'll be fitting a new hub . :)

Went for a test runs this morning.
Love that new clutch.
I went with the Sintered bronze friction plates and of course a new clutch center .
Thanks again for all the great advise.
If I can find my camera I'll post some photos of the worn hub center.
As to how I didn't catch it sooner, I plead the 5th.

That's why we were stumped. Would never recommend an alloy clutch hub, especially on maybe worn main shaft splines.. Good learning curve. Bit of a curved ball there as well.

Good on yer mate.

Interesting.
Was yours an alloy clutch center?
How were the outer splines where the clutch plates mesh?
How are the mainshaft splines looking?

Mine are steel. I replaced it with another steel one.
I have a good bit of spare parts laying around in my cave.
Works really nice now, but I could use a new sleeve gear.
It shows more wear than I care for.
I'll dig one out later on.
