Finally got my shop set up w/ wifi from the house, a hi def web cam, and an old computer. Another member of the board, Olephart, is an old friend who actually owned the shop I bought my '74 Commando from way back in the day. When technical things work right, we can both hang out and work on my scoot....though he's in Alabama and I'm in Kansas. Internet speeds sometimes fuzz up the video, but we're both out in the country and take what we can get.
Last week we put the brakes together and new bearings in the rear hub. This weekend I wanted to pull the layshaft bearing out since every other wheel or neck bearing that I have replaced has been Portuguese so far. Following the Workshop Companion model , http://www.doov.com/apps/nortoncompanion/, we left the tranny on the bike. The old beast was tough to separate, but the layshaft and bearing cameout OK with enough heat. BUT, along the way, I found bushing problems and ended up pulling the primary side and the rest of the gears.
1st gear layshaft bushing had broker chunks out of it.
Some wear on the backside that Olephart couldn't really judge from the middling video quality at the time so I post it here for opinions:
4th gear Main's bushing has traveled through and out on the splines:
Since I now had it apart, I could see the counter-shaft sprocket needed replacing.
And the mainshaft bearing feels really rough, so it's gotta go.
Haven't got the layshaft bearing of the shaft yet, but it feels good. Noway it goes back in but we were laughing that the reason for this mission may be in better shape than the rest of this stuff!
Anyway, I'd like to thank Olephart for the help. And this board for always bringing up the tranny as a 'must do'.
And Skype, it's free, and it's the next best thing to being there. Better actually,....I can always hang up if I catch too much grief!
