Finally got my shop set up w/ wifi from the house, a hi def web cam, and an old computer. Another member of the board, Olephart, is an old friend who actually owned the shop I bought my '74 Commando from way back in the day. When technical things work right, we can both hang out and work on my scoot....though he's in Alabama and I'm in Kansas. Internet speeds sometimes fuzz up the video, but we're both out in the country and take what we can get.
Last week we put the brakes together and new bearings in the rear hub. This weekend I wanted to pull the layshaft bearing out since every other wheel or neck bearing that I have replaced has been Portuguese so far. Following the Workshop Companion model , http://www.doov.com/apps/nortoncompanion/, we left the tranny on the bike. The old beast was tough to separate, but the layshaft and bearing cameout OK with enough heat. BUT, along the way, I found bushing problems and ended up pulling the primary side and the rest of the gears.
1st gear layshaft bushing had broker chunks out of it.

Some wear on the backside that Olephart couldn't really judge from the middling video quality at the time so I post it here for opinions:

4th gear Main's bushing has traveled through and out on the splines:

Since I now had it apart, I could see the counter-shaft sprocket needed replacing.

And the mainshaft bearing feels really rough, so it's gotta go.

Haven't got the layshaft bearing of the shaft yet, but it feels good. Noway it goes back in but we were laughing that the reason for this mission may be in better shape than the rest of this stuff!
Anyway, I'd like to thank Olephart for the help. And this board for always bringing up the tranny as a 'must do'.

And Skype, it's free, and it's the next best thing to being there. Better actually,....I can always hang up if I catch too much grief!

And all this from a gearbox that presumably had oil in it.

As long as a new bush fits properly into the first gear, the gear should be fine.

Nice documentation and keep us posted. How are the face of the teeth?

Teeth look good.
How are bushings removed and installed? Bearings I'm getting competent at, bushings I have no experience with. Olephart says take them to a machine shop, but my choices around here give me pause. Maybe he just figures I'll botch the job!

Pulled the bearing off the shaft, Portuguese, but it looks good, feels good...actually seems in better shape than the stuff I wasn't worried about before I started.

over 19,000 miles on it.

hehe, the Brits have a saying in for penny then down for the pounds.
Get a spare 1st gear bush and pawl spring and maybe the KS rachet pawl too and 3rd bush or two long bushes for the sleeve shaft and oil groove em. No all the bushes are sized to fit so definitely take to machinist to ream to help retain the oil baring surface. You have not yet mentioned the sealing stuff nor did Mr. Hudson but don't worry you will.

Clutch bearing...another Portuguese FAG bearing...I think I'm batting 1000.

Still usable? Fixable?

Actually, I've not.

I have seen plenty of wear but yours has very pronounced notches as though the previous owner never shifted and the clutch pack never moved or wore.

Ditto the "Crap-ola" unless you are in a real pinch and cherish pulling it off to replace it a little later.

Olephart told me it'd be cheaper to buy a running Commando and use mine for parts.

Anywho, got my new clutch center from Andover, the inside splines looked so different I though I'd got the wrong part. Closer inspection was revealing. And I was worried about the outside......

A little closer look...

That led to a look at the mainshaft....

Fits together well with new center, but a bit wobbly.

and this is the worst appearing gear, still usable I hope...
