Lansdowne Fork Damper Kit (2009)

Just ordered my kit and can't wait to get out in the shop and pull the forks down. John, thanks for your help in making our old bikes handle as good as they run. Will post another post after kit is installed and tested.
 
Hello Steve. thanks for your interest, Just waiting for a consignment of Dampers from China :lol: :wink: I'm affraid its a few more hours in the workshop this week...just had Gino on the phone...he's really struggling with fork bush's, i am developing a fork recon kit,,,i think there is need for one...check all your parts..new bush's in worn legs are tricky..and dont buy from Ebay..over-size and wrong material is common.....regards John Lansdowne Eng

Not just ebay. Other parts stores have the wrong ones too. I've been down that road twice now.

WELL I STARTED A 30 MINUTE DEBATE ABOUT FORK OIL :!: VISCOSITY,TEMP, AIRATION, PORTING..FOAM DEPLETION....ANTI OXIDENTS,,AND WEAR RESISTERS..........SHIT! THE MISSUS IS SAT IN THE CAR OUTSIDE! HAVE I TIME !!! THEN THE DEATH KNELL........FORK MULTI GRADE!!!!!! DOE'S IT EXSIST :!: ....ANY FORUM MEMBERS KNOW :!: :!: :!: :?:
 
Hi. Remember my oil recommendation [10 grade] is a starting point.....If you need to screw out the needle more than three turns to effect a proper "feel" the viscosity is to high . My basic recommendations; minus 2- 5c = 2.5 sae, 5c - 15c = 5 sae,,and over 15c = 10 grade ...and if you live in Death Valley....30 grade!! until fork multi grade is available you will require a little experimenting......regards John Lansdowne Eng ..

Remember 10 grade is a average summer weight! Fitting these in winter and filling with 10 grade is going to feel very stiff....2.5 would be required ...

I don't remember ever seeing anything like that. As SAE10 is about as thin as road bikes normally use.
 
I seem to recall that some UJMs use 5wt fork oil...or did when I was working on them for a living :?
 
Fellas,

I hope everyone (and especially Mr. Bould) knows that fork oil weights stated on product labels become trivial when different brands are compared against each other. There is no SAE standardization of suspension oils like there is for motor oil.

For example, Silkolene 5w has an actual viscosity rating of 22.30! Yet Maxima 5w has an actual viscosity of 16.20. Amsoil #5 has a viscosity of 15.70.

So, what viscosities are you all truly running in your forks? The difference between one brand to another can be quite significant.

Seriously I never realised that so I suppose its a case of suck it and see.
 
Well here's my test...10 grade at 2 degree's c 1/2 pint poured into a funnel reduced to a small hole; duration 37 seconds...then warmed to 25 c= 17 seconds...Which brings my to " why the Best German Tanks" lost against sloppy Russian Tanks......yea the cold! they had Norton suspension :D :!: and bleedin thin oil!!!!!
 
Gino...Kenny is right..suck it and see...Three oils all labeled 5 weight==Torco RFF 5 is 10.75 at 40c Maxima 5 is 16.2 and silkolene is 22 again all at 40c....hope they don't start selling beer...!
