is it possible to shim the kick start shaft while the gearbox is mounted in the motorcycle? I should have paid more attention when rebuilding the gearbox, but didn’t. It looks like I can pull the outer and inner covers in place. I’m worried about how to rotate the shaft sprocket when fitting everything back. I REALLY don’t want to pull the gearbox. End play is significant. I haven’t put a dial gauge on it but probably close to .050”. Thanks.

The inner cover has to be removed. You can do it in situ no problem. The shims go between the kickstart shaft and the inner face of the inner cover. There is a good photo in that thread. I've been meaning to check mine but I haven't had an issue.

Piece of cake. I have installed new kicker pawls in the gas station lot without even draining the oil.
But you will curse at it the first time.

When I have done mine on the road, I lay the bike clear down with a little padding under the end of the bars. Then I don't even loose any oil.
I like original gaskets glued solid on one side and greased on the other. Then they stay in place for a long time through several disassembles.

I generally but not always wipe (wet) the gasket with Loctite 518 or was it 515.
I have also found the best way to have a gasket not tear or be furbared in any way at removal is to buy a replacement gasket prior to removal.

True, though I've only done that with rocker cover gaskets, hi-temp RTV on the engine facing surface, grease on the other
