It would be totally criminal to paint strip that !

Joe, if it’s showing it’s age, and to afford it’s protection for even longer, a good painter could clear coat your original paint, making it look great and preserving it for another 50 years !

Yes that would be appreciated, I don't know the NAPA number would translate here in New Zealand, but any information like that nay well prove to be helpful.

Not a viable option here in New Zealand, plus I have an excellent panel beater/painter that I am always happy with.

htown16, please post the colours you used. the list from England has colours which may not even be available in NA because the cars they are for never made it over here.

PS; my 74 came in the JPN colours when new. so i have a dog in this fight...

That is way too nice to strip. If you want JPN colors, find an extra tank and side covers and paint them. Then if you decide you like the JPN scheme better you can sell your original set, probably for enough money to pay for your repainted set.

I have a set of NOS Interstate covers in candy red. They are still in the original wrapping. I really like that color. I have a couple steel Interstate tanks in primer. Some day I'll paint one to match the covers.
 
First a disclaimer, these are not guaranteed to be a match to the factory colors. I studied lots of pictures and tested different colors to get an eyeball match. One thing I noticed on most of the pictures is that the blue is pretty dark, in fact on some pictures it looks black. This is a pretty dark blue. Anyway here is what I used.
Duplicolor BNS0562 Super White.
Duplicolor BFM0306 Ford Cardinal red
Duplicolor BFM0340 Ford Royal blue
Spraymax 2K clear coat.

If decide to sell the three pieces , I would be interested, and I would help locate paintable good replacements
 
These 2 colours that Htown posted are available in the UK as are other versions of the colour names, thank you Mr Ford for being a tight arse ;)

ABSOLUTELY set the bike on level ground, on the centerstand, and chock tires as required for overall level (check with a level on the top of the Z-plate).

Then get your masking tape and level, and mark the tank and sidecovers top & bottom of main striping locations, with a thin line of tape. Also both sidecovers with another thin line at bottom of decal locations.

You could use a laser level. I checked the decals that had already been applied to mine. I'm not certain they are the right height but they'll do.
