It's a long way to 920 type(rary)

Ok Yves, I understood the wrong way around! So you have them on almost the richest setting?

And your current set up that you are so happy with is with the K&Ns and cNw adapters?

Your engine is very similar to my ‘work in progress’ 920, hence my interest!
Hi Nigel,
My current set up is with the K&Ns and CNW adapters
The FCR needle as 7 groves, I set it on grove 4 from the top, this is not the richest setting.
Keep in mind that I still have to go to the dyno for gas analyse, so far the settings are done only by my feeling, but I think it will be close to perfection
I plan to go to the dyno on saturday
Keep you posted
Yves

Hi there,
Here be 3 pics of my spark plugs, Denso Iridium 22, after a road trip of 400 kms, so this pics are made affter arrival in my workshop, not after a spark plug stop at WOT
The temperature was around 31 degrees celcius.
Wish to receive your opinion please
Yves

In my opinion are they a little too hot. Half of the side electrode should have a darker part. In my opinion, you have too lean mixture or too worm plug.

Hi there,
Yesterday I did a test trip from 400 kms, going to the classic races at Chimay, the 920 did it perfectly, carbs setting and ignition timing same to be perfect, I did a part of the road on highway at 4800 RPM, sometime a did a push to 6200, after the highway, I was on B roads with a lot of long turns, what a joy, finally I am so happy, not one problem no oil leaks, the 0.5mm don't blow and the engine is amasing powerfull.
At the track of Chimay, I meet Ralph, aka Storm 42, and is lovely wife Georgina, we did a long chat, Ralph was there w/o bike, BTW Ralph says that he never race, only Parade, but he gat a lot of knowledge about Norton.
Always fine to meet a member of Access live
I will not work this week, Belgium is as warm as the Dead Valley over the 30 degrees Celcius
Keep you posted
Yves

Good to meet you as well Yves, Georgina is blushing :). I will try to race at Chimay next year and then i will chase you for your track knowledge.

Of course I can find cooler Denso iridium sparks, but to me I need to put a ritcher needle and maybe a bigger main jet
Thanks
Yves

Hi Ralph, When I was racing at Chimay it was on the big track, I never race on the short track
If I remember well the lap record on the long track was around 200 kms/h or 120 miles/hour
Of course I will be your biggest supporter
Yves

Yes, I agree with this.
Wishing you good luck on raceing or is’t «Bresk a leg»

Yves, second and third pictures have some particles on the first couple of threads.
Is this from a rag from wiping the plug or from inside the engine?
Regards Mike

I use IW27, so would have though that yes IW22 is to hot for hard use, maybe IW24 would be a better choice. The electrodes on my plugs don't look so overheated.

Other than that my plugs look very similar on colour. Currently I am a little weak on the main jet, rolling the throttle back from WOT in top at over 6500 tends to be better! I went up one size for an improvement, needs one or two more. I also went to a weaker needle last weekend, which reduced a lot of the black around the plug outer, and gave significantly more mid throttle/rpm punch out of corners.

I am using 98 octane pump fuel. Bruno Perlinski showed me two perfect light brown coloured plugs (NGK iridium but same range - 10) from one of his engines on the same day, but I didn't ask if he has some avgas in the mix.

I noticed those Mike, on the plug body I also thought maybe rag or blue paper.

In the first picture I see something on the electrode, difficult to tell in a photo, I would worry that they are some small aluminium particles, due to plug heat range! This is a road engine, so the plug range is as standard, but I think Yves is using it quite hard at times!

Hi SteveA, yes I thought perhaps too much advance and perhaps a touch lean would create those particles although not a great deal of the same on the porcelain or the electrode.
I'll show to others more knowledgable than me and report back
Regards Mike

Hi there
When I take a look at the plugs, I don't see any particules, maybe it can be a effect from the pic?
I never use any rag or blue paper on the plugs.
I already order the 24 Denso Iridium plugs, and the bigger jets, I will first put a ritcher needle and see
There is no place on the Dyno before next week friday
Yves

Yves, we know we can't get really good colour readings with out lead in the fuel, but if you have an eyeglass can you see the colour down inside the plug, that may be more useful.

White is better than black!

Hi there,
This are the pics from the sparplug after the following changes:
First I change the needels, from EMT witch is 2.775 to EMR witch is 2.755 and put the clips on grove 4 from the top, I change also the main jet from 170 to 175. I did a test ride on sunday and watch the plugs after the ride, the plugs where looking more sano as before and the bike was going like hell, but to me still to lean, so to day I change the main jet from 175 to 185 and put the clip on grove 5 from the top, did a test ride and here are the pics.
The bike was still going fast, but in first gear I gat a flat spot at low REV, around 3.000 RPM, this don't happens in the hupper gears... should I go to to grove 6 or back to grove 4??
Your valuable opinions are always welcome
I am still waithing for the K&N velocty starks with adaptrs for K&N filters
Thanks for the help
Yves

In my opinion, the plugs look OK. If you want to test more then I would try grove 6 from top instead of grove 4.
You're so close to the optimum now that it's just test drive with wide lamda sensor that can bring you closer to the perfect setting.

Thanks Friend,
I will test at grove 6 tomorow and keep you posted

Yves, I showed your plug pictures to my race bike engine builder, he thinks you maybe making too much advance when at the higher rpm and was wondering if you tried a non protruding spark plug and try the tests again without changing the carb settings. Just an idea.
