It followed me home!!

I've removed the sump plates from the motor and the frame and left it to drain
Is like to get all of the old putrid black oil out
There's black sludge in the engine sump plate but no debris on the gauze filter
Looking at the exhaust valves number one and two looked good
But number 3 was black and oily
"Rust preventative"

Resist the urge to see if it will run. If it does you will likely find that it needs an overhaul. So do it before you run it up and circulate all sorts of crude through the engine.
I know you don't want to. But....

I hear you
But I really need to fire it just to see
I'm guessing it's going to be a smoker, looking at the crowns of the pistons

Regarding the "test run it" versus "tear it down" engine question, that is a very real fork-in-the-road decision because tearing it down may not be something a person wants to invest time/money in.

Especially on a Triumph / BSA triple 💰💰💰
As usual I'm up against it time wise
I probably shouldn't have bought this bike at this time
I have several project bikes to do as it is
But I didn't want to pass this one up
They don't come along that often
My plan is to fire it up
See what it runs like and put it away whilst I finish my other halfs bike or she may kill me !

The gantry on the carbs isn't returning properly despite being fitted with an extra return spring
I reckon the top end will require refreshing at some stage
I'm just happy it ran
I need to fit an oil pressure gauge and check the cylinder compression

That sounds pretty good Baz
It did sound pretty good
No knocks bangs or rattles
I popped the exhaust valve inspection cover and noticed the rocker gear was lightened and polished
I'd love to know the history of this bike
I know it was built from parts in 1981
And an old mate of mine rode this bike on a track day in the late eighties when the owner leant it to him
And that's about all I know

I've been running my new toy a bit more and yesterday I turned the ignition off and it carried on running
So I disconnected the battery and it still carried on
It's clearly not wired correctly
What I can't work out is previously it was turning off ok ?

I had a Bantam once that did this on occasions.

It culminated one day when it was screaming its tits off at the side of the road. I even yanked off the plug cap and it still kept screaming !

I had to unscrew the pancake air filter and suffocate it to stop it.

I was only 17. I was dumbfounded. Even started thinking it might be haunted!

It needed a de-coke…

No idea how relevant this is to your R3 Baz but… it is a BSA… and it doesn’t switch off… and it does sound like it might be haunted…👻

When I added the Alton to my Vincent it did this. It turned out that the way the bike was wired allowed the Alton output to power the points ignition even with the key off and battery taken out of the circuit.
I was surprised that the Alton had enough output at idle to power the ignition, but that particular version did.
It was a sped up version with an internal transmission. Later on the transmission gears failed and Alton provided me with a direct drive Alton which is still on the bike. I doubt that one would run the ignition at idle.

In your case the engine was clearly overheating and deisiling
My bike wasn't hot enough for that
It's picking up a charge from the alternator somehow
And somehow intermittently?
