A simple question for those that have them, will they fit with the standard chain guard on a 1972 750 Roadster?

Sadly I don’t think it’s quite that simple. It’ll depend on which versions of 7610 I think from looking at their site. Of the 4 they show when you type in Norton, only the 7610-1653-SP9 looks like it’ll clear to me...

I can't see the swingarms being that much different.
On my Mk2a with 7610-1653 (on the box) there is a good 6 mm to 8 mm clearance from the shock body to chain guard.
Those pictures seem to show a variance, on the ones I have there is around 100 mm / 4" from the lower mount to the preload adjuster so the shock body only is present, the preload being 25 mm or so above the chain guard.
The ones I got were the 'Standard option (Chrome body, black spring, no cover)

Andover Norton is showing the same part number for the 1972 chain guard and the one for the Mk2a 850 with no cut out as I have...fwiw.

I just installed 7614-1653 on my 74. 336.oo sterling out the door. These are chrome body
black spring. Screw type spring preload. They have generous clearance at the chain guard.
On the other hand the typical 7610 which I have on my 73 Trident do not fully clear the
chain guard slightly rubbing the finish. Cannot see how they would work on the Commando
but have not tried to fit them.

Hello Dommie Nator.
I don't know if the fitting of the chainguard on the '72 750 is similar to an 850 manufactured in 9-73. Here are my Ikons installed on the 850. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for all your helpful replies and pictures. I've gone for the 7610 1653 model although there's a four to five week wait.
So coupled with the Landsdowne damper front end I'm hoping to drag my Commando suspension into the 1980s.
I'll confirm if all has gone to plan...or not.

Ikons are on with no chain guard issues.
I did notice when the damping adjustment control wheel was outermost, due to the seat knob, it was quite hard to get access to turn it. So I put them on the inside to allow easier access (ok, the seat has to come off).

Do you have them both to compare like for like?Picture of a Koni 7610 series shock bottom with offset mount, useful for a Commando and the tight clearance to the chain guard.
not sure why they used a thinner spring on their Commando specified shock and not this solution.

I only have the 76 series Commando to compare and as these have the thinner single springs they have a central lower mount and no clash with the chainguard. There were some 7610-1429 off a 250 Honda which I will use to add to some 76-1373 series internals and fit wider progressive springs to.
