MadNorton. Where are you getting this information from? They are a limited production bike, but still producing, selling and honoring warranties as far as we know.

Obviously I will not disclose where I get information from, but you have got to ask - is all well and the look around. Dealers pressurised into buying more bikes that come Jan 17 they can't sell in the UK and EU as they have no anti-lock brakes. Even the website still lists them without anti-lock, so I reckon Dec could be good month to buy a new 961 as dealers offload. The bikes should be available now and not cutting it fine to the deadline.

What is appalling is that this regulation came into force Jan this year - this is the year of grace, and was passed about 18 months before, so why the delay. Maybe there is more to the announcement when the new bike is unveiled later this year - no more 961's? maybe why the dealers where pushed to take more and shift them.

All this while Indian manufacturers are fighting over themselves to buy a British motorcycle name - it is more than Mahindra that are looking by the way.

Maybe it is the right time to sell and move Norton Motorcycles up the sales ranks, 2000 bikes a year to run the factory, wages, pay suppliers, rates, insurance, etc would be cutting it thin in the profit stakes.

It maybe good now, but could be better in the future - lets hope so.

Hi. I bumped in to Stuart Garner on a recent visit to the factory. He seems very passionate about the 961. He spent time with me discussing it's future He has been previously interviewed regarding Indian take overs and denied it vigorously. I am not sure where you get your information from but from my perspective it seems badly squewed and almost like you are trying to cause trouble. My apologies if I am incorrect.

Hey, I only asked the question expecting a definitive yes or no as someone must know, I would very much like to see them stay with British based manufacturing and assembly, selling even more bikes and taking sales from the likes of Ducati, BMW and the like.

I thought that ABS was a requirement of euro 4?

This topic also has me wondering if the 961s are euro 4 compliant wth regards to noise and exhaust emissions. Does anyone know?

Regarding euro 4 and ABS, I would have thought ABS was the easy / cheap part of the challenge as that's very standard tech these days. It must surely be more challenging getting a 961cc 2 valve, aircooled, pushrod twin through the emissions requirements!?

I don't think they need to be until 1st January 2017.

Euro 4 has been in the news because it affects almost all new bikes sold throughout Europe after 1 January 2017. Anything sold under previous regulations will still be totally legal and won’t be forced to meet harder rules. The new regulations are being applied only to new bikes, and over two stages. The first stage applies to newly-designed machines that first went on sale after 1 January 2016 – so things like Kawasaki’s 2016 ZX-10R and Triumph’s new water-cooled Bonnevilles are already compliant. The second stage, in force from 1 January 2017, applies to existing models, which will have to be updated and retested to prove they pass the new rules.

Understood Lab, so the question is, will 961s be Euro compliant in Jan 17? It's not very far away...

I expect so. If they want to continue selling 961s in 2017 then I suppose they will have to be.

No way will the 961 be euro 5 complient, said this back in June and was shot down in flames a big thousand a.c.e
Is struggling to meet imissions now.

I don't really know EU environmental laws, but does Norton get a pass maybe due to being a very low volume production (200 or so units a year) company?
Is there a low production threshold below which the manufacturer would be given additional time to conform to Euro 5?

I have a 2016 SF. So far my problems have been electrical. First problem was the turn signal indicator in the tach which I found to be a broken wire where the left and right wire are crimped where they come to a "Y" and go into one wire before the plug connection into the tach. I cut away the shrink tube and soldered the 3 wires together and put dielectric grease and re shrink tubed the wires. All is well now.

My new problem is the green "N" neutral light flickers off and on only while riding between 1000-3500 rpm. I have counted over 25-30 times in a mile that it does this. I have so far removed the speedometer cup and checked the connections, wiggled and tugged the wires, put dielectric grease on all electrical connections and grounds, checked the neutral switch connection, shifter free play and made sure all fuses were tight. I checked continuity from the plug to the neutral switch connector and wiggled the wiring and I still can not get it to duplicate the problem when the bike is at a sit still. Once I ride the bike it acts up again every time. All this started once the bike hit the 100 mile mark on the odometer. It now has 150 miles on the bike. My last thought is maybe the neutral switch detent is weak and the engine vibrations cause it to flicker? Any ideas? Where can I get a electrical diagram?

Hi Scott,

The neutral flicker is actually from induced voltage from electrical noise, basically its a random occurrence that happens to some of the looms when they are twisted and wrapped together in manufacture. Randomly sometimes certain wires will end up next to other wires and cause 'cross talk' between them. The solution to this is a simple one and can be performed by your local dealer (or yourself if you feel confident), it involves taking the back off your clock and bridging a 1k resistor between the 12 V ignition feed and the neutral light wire. PM if you need further detail on how to do this.

I got the occasional fuel light flicker, especially when my directional signal is on.

Thank you for your reply, Simon. A new glitch...a few attempts to start, sounds like no fuel. Reset ignition key fires up fine. Also...I'm stalling more often then not when the bike is hot. Its intermittent. She'll run good all day, but after taking a little break and resuming my trip, she idles at 800 and stalls. I haven't paid it much mind when it was far and few apart, but its becoming more frequent. I'll go to my dealer, but thought you might have some ideas to share. Currently 6500 miles on it.

I had no luck reaching Simon after trying all month last September. There does seem to be a disconnect. :?
