Head studs -more aluminum bronze inserts

The installation video was great but that torque test had me on the edge of my seat! Seriously impressive stuff. One less reason for not having an oil tight engine.

After I destroyed the first stud I though I would check to see if the insert was compromised. I went ahead and tried 3 more studs and tightened them until failure. The insert remained unaffected. Jim

Very good to know how good the inserts holds so perfect situation to try a cyro temepered stud to see how much or not that helps fasteners.

If I sent the Wright Bros airplane to you I suspect you could make it break the sound barrier.

Tool room wizard you are!

Well why don't you have some done and send them to me. I will see how much torque they take till failure.

ok comnoz i've a handfull of various Norton old and new studs for head and cases so will send in soon with some new saw chains. The significance of course is not making studs stronger but provening how much it might be worth on other items though rod bolts come to mind. If ya can slice out a section of head with stud holes threads in it I'd be way more interested in what cryo does to non ferric thread strength and thereby the rest of it.

I would be interested in that also. I will see what I can come up with.

Well we now know what plain alu threads can stand so after testing a cyro's set to failure just stick in your insert to recover and we'll know if cryo can relieve the need so often. Leaves me laughing/crying to actually see someone bring to full torque then some more just to be sure then back off some, just in case.

Jim didn't really see the cracks on those 2 heads.. were they between the studs and pushrod tunnels?

i want to die penetrant test mine, and was really only expecting to check under the intake valve seat

The cracks are in the intake port going into the guide hole where RH4 heads normally crack. I will see if I can get a picture although I don't know if the dye will show up with a camera. Jim

thanks, no need to post other pictures i know what i hope i don't find when i do the die test on my head...

I'm doing the due diligents , the head was of when i bought the bike, and had new guides, valves and springs installed 15 yrs ago, but was never reassembled.

Well I got a picture of a classic crack. It was completely invisible to the naked eye but after a little heat and some dye it showed up good.
