Gus Kuhn Fairing

Good luck with your dream project , will check in periodically , remember to post lots of photos !

Nice decals yes, but to answer Norcoastals question, I do not believe that fairing shown has race history. The only racing that would have headlights would be endurance racing, and endurance racers have a HARD life and that faring looks too good to be an endurance race survivor to me.

Personally, I’d always go new over old when it comes to fibre glass if possible. Some of the old stuff was not well made, and it often needs a lot of work, which is fine if it’s something rare or special, but not if it’s just some unknown aftermarket stuff IMHO.

The one I’m getting is an original Gus Kuhn. And since this will never be a real JPN no matter what I do, I’m less concerned about the JPN replica parts. After all, this is a Frankenbike,

The price I’m paying for the GK is the same price as the new street replica and as Pete says, it doesn’t have the cool stickers.

I appreciate your thoughts Fast, but this guy has had this sitting around his shop for the past 15 years and assures me that it’s an original Gus Kuhn.

And I’m more of a original guy opposed to new. He tells me that this is very sturdy and very few stress cracks. I have replica racer parts now and they seem pretty flimsy.

These parts should go well with my original GK gas tank.

It’s a patchwork quilt, but I IIke the way it’s progressing.

here's a good resource for you just in case you need any reproduction glass parts. It also can be a way to check the prices being asked for original parts... I wouldn't know or bet, that the GFTP "layup" for their glass products is as heavy duty as the original ones were. I'm pessimistic that way,... but it's worth a look for reference sake.

Ain‘t gonna argue with that.

So whatayer waitin’ for ?!

BTW, does it come with a screen?

It does come with a screen, but sadly it looks like this, but you can buy these in reproduction.

I told him I’m taking it and he’s just getting me accurate shipping. The seat is already bought.

I had a screen made for a road version of this fairing here in UK. Turned out very well, and I got two, as that’s how they are made!

I needed something to reignite my build. For some reason I wasn’t loving the proddy racer and this fairing and seat are just what I needed!

Does anyone know anyone who wants a reproduction proddy racer fairing and seat?

Just posted them up in For Sale. Gotta fund the new parts!

Brand new seat cushion.

The race JPN's where the fairing covered the handlebars were based on the Peel Mountain Mile fairing but narrower as per Peter Williams requirements. For The recent Peter Williams replicas they were remade for Peter by Ragged Edge who also do the larger Peel Mountain Mile copy. Just some useless info.

Ragged Edge....just in case anyone needs one. He also has the Paul Mooney version which is a bit wider for the bars

More useful info. There was actually an official JPN endurance racer at Montjuic in '74

I know "Crasher" was one of the pilots, not sure who else though.

So cool. I’m hoping this fairing won’t smash into my hands when I turn the bars like the proddy does.

Back in the day you would probably have seen a Gus Kuhn bike to get bitten by the bug to build a replica. It's easy enough now to just do a google image search and get an idea which way you want to go with your build. I've searched already, and there are some nice examples of Gus Kuhn bikes and quite a few mixed parts examples with Gus Kuhn tanks or fairings. It's nice to see pictures to know if that's the look (and riding position) you wish to have when your project is finished...

My method of bike evolution is to pick a direction and slowly morph in that direction, get disgusted, change direction, then repeat... It can get expensive, but not compared to some people who have twice the amount of money in their bike as I do. If you feel you want to go in that direction and have the money,... no brainer..

I think the Gus Kuhn bikes were all Seeleys.

There may be more sources but this was the first I came across...
They do ‘Street’ made for the wide twin headlights. Or ‘race’ with no lights, which you could put a small LED light into.
I sent them my fairing in order for them to build the moulds for the street version just a few years ago. I was rewarded with a badly crazed clearcoat and a new blank fairing when they returned it. No apologies. Sigh...
