Get out the straight jacket

Just a thought for your new engine build plans… Andy Molnar is developing an 8 valve Norton head.

Jus’ sayin’ …

I'm the wrong guy and would definitely need a higher strength straight jacket.

Does MPL have enough resources to actually test something like that the way successful companies like Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Ducati, BMW, ... the list goes on could? Whoever buys into it would essentially be a Beta design tester paying MPL. And it will probably be sort of fugly like all the other attempts have been. Seems to me an 8-valve head would require an entirely new motor that bolts into an old classic frame. Otherwise, it will be a kluge regardless of who designs it.

Anyway, the Manx performance parts business must be really good to chase that dream. Good luck Andy

Andy developed the 4 valve short stroke Manx from scratch and that is awesome. So I’d say he has as good a chance as anyone in the game.

OHC is much easier to work with though. I really wish the twin had a chain driven OHC. It would be a dream come true to swap out cams in a old Norton twin in under an hour.

We are getting into the 'way past stock' area here. Thinking about the crank that is made out of pieces held together with bolts and nuts, cases that are not all that much better, Ill skip the primary and gear box because my stock items are long gone so I am not one to talk. FE and his 'holistic' approach is on the mark. You are correct with the idea of bolting in a new power unit. In which case time to talk about a new frame and suspension.
As you noted the money you are in for would easily buy a new bike. Again I have been on that bus for far too long. It is such fun to do what you are doing but we are surely living in the past.

I've seen too many nikasil bores with the plating flaking off--not sure I'd ever be comfortable with nikasil in one of my own engines.

Since we have wandered into the territory of high zoot, high performance parts, is anybody out there offering a 270 degree crank for the venerable Norton twin?

In my case this unending wrenching adventure is more like riding in a clown car at the circus. ;)

If I didn't enjoy something about all of it, it would be a huge waste of money. If I told youz guys why I am actually doing the project, the straight jacket reference would make more sense.

BTW, wait till you see what Nigel is up to, if you don't already know. Eye candy with a heavy dose of haul ass.

'If I didn't enjoy something about all of it, it would be a huge waste of money.'

Yep..... That's the bottom line, the day someone else earns my money is the day they can tell me how to spend it :-)

(Mind you, as I draw state pension in six weeks time, should I change that??)

Executive decision was made to stick with the iron liners and building a sleeper in the original cases. Andy says the cases don't break all that often on the street with good parts making up the rotating assembly, and I'll add using a dose of common sense about rev limits.

I'm already on my own money I gave the government for decades. All I can say it doesn't go that far, and it's a good thing I was putting money into a 401K when I was struggling for the legal tender.
