Fuel pump plate o ring on Norton 961

Not too promising. A $50 oring. If you end up getting the o-ring , you should get some sealant too.

Bought a genuine Aprillia O ring from ex Australian Aprillia dealer that was selling off parts stock for 30.45 aus dollars and fuel filter Ap9100930 for17.72 aus dollars with postage price total still less than AF1 without postage for ring alone. VAT and customs charge in UK high but still a saving to either AF1 or all UK Aprillia parts dealers that quoted £60 plus for ring alone!
Measured ring and is standard Viton 5x90 (id) and £19.66 including Vat and postage with next day delivery for pack of TWO o rings from Simply Bearings Ltd.
Hope this may help someone!
Regards from Scotland to All.

Yes the Aprillia O ring is definitely over priced at AF1, they admitted that also... but it worked, no more leak, so far.

I've been looking in to getting some o-rings from our fuel pump manufacturer, since there seems to be demand for them. Previously, people have taken off the o-rings to send out, from perfectly serviceable fuel pumps, thus rendering them useless.
I have stopped this from happening, as it makes no commercial sense - so I apologise if you are (temporarily) unable to source o-rings via us.
We buy the pump as an assembly, hence why we aren't able to support on broken spigots etc - but again, if the demand is there, I'm happy to look in to it.

Yes spigots would be welcome to keep in stock, I broke mine & had to source a white coloured one from a Moto Guzzi dealer for £25 which was better than a £300 pump, think more customers are actually riding Norton bikes now & putting miles on them ,so more spares & sundies on the shelf would be most welcome Rob

Yes would be nice to be available at a reasonable price. Like the oil filter which is not only expensive from Norton but does not come with an o ring for the cover which I had to get separately from Norton at a rediculous price when one can buy the same rings for a fraction as with fuel pump o ring. I got 25 o rings for the same price by shopping around which will do our 3 961 servicing for some time. Why can Norton include a new ring with each filter they supply when they actually remove the Mercedes sized o ring from the filter package before sending the filter out? Would make more sense.

Hi,
We have been told that the engine oil sump drain plug and transmission drain and level plugs are reusable with their existing seals.
Is this correct?
The plugs we have bought with great difficulty from Norton complete with seals are fairly expensive and it seams wasteful not just to change the seals if the plugs themselves are reusable and not damaged as possible on most other vehicles.
Are there replacement seals available? Are suitable alternatives known with obtainable replacement seals after each removal for reuse?

I don't see any reason why you can't reuse the seal as long as it's still in good condition and not hardened. Unfortunately our supply comes in as a 'unit' again, so I'd need to look in to just the seals, assuming the demand is there.

I'll look in to the fuel pump spigots and let you know if I get anywhere.

Afraid I don't control pricing, not an awful lot I can do there.

If your drain plugs are like mine then you can reuse them many times over. There is a groove that the rubber seal sits in. There is a hex Hole that you insert the allen key into . Is your drain plugs like that ?

Don't over torque them 20NM is the spec.

Yes same type plugs with Viton "rubber" seals some new come with even wrong sized "loose" fitted seals.
All "rubber" o ring seals deteriorate in use and even when fitting. They can harden, stretch, compress, etc..
I have always been advised by manufacturers that they should be replaced after each use and not reused.
If one reused an o ring seal and it failed as with a sump plug leak engine oil which could spray on to rear tyre on a run and cause an accident and or engine or transmission failure if the transmission drain plug seal failed.
I doubt that Norton would warrant a failed engine or transmission due to an o ring that had been reused a number of times subsequently failed??
Personally I would rather be safe than sorry and replace such seals rather than reuse as is the recommendation of most vehicle manufacturers Worldwide for the normally small cost of an o ring and most are able to supply, some even supply sump plug seals with replacement oil filters and certainly with service kits. E.g. Toyota who also supply Toyota branded oil in their service kits at considerable discounted prices as well.
Hence my question as to whether the oil and transmission drain plug seals were available as I have as yet not found these plugs manufacturer or their type name and have previously asked then Norton dealers if they could supply seals or plugs who answered NO as they had tried but could not get them from Norton those subsequently ordered and paid for direct from Norton were sent to the same dealer without any details of who ordered and put in the dealer stock.
Took three weeks to get them eventually from the dealer after more calls to Norton etc.

This is one of the many reasons why this forum is so great. My fuel pump O ring appears to have given up the ghost. I found it leaking yesterday morning at 1300 miles. I remembered this thread and went right to it with a simple search. I will be ordering one from the Apprila superstore today. I also have some Loctite 518 on the way as well.

I would be interested to know what had happened here - how old is the bike? I wouldn't expect the o-ring to fail without either a manufacturing fault, assembly fault or tank flange fault/ distortion. I am very concerned about ethanol tank attack but wouldn't expect it at this age.

also note that Moto Guzzi use the same pump and housing in some of their models.

2014. I’m thinking it’s a composite tank issue

While reading up on the subject a Duck owner made the comment that if you have been using ethanol fuel for a few years you may think that your tank is not distorted but if you compared it to a new one you would see the difference. Have a good close look at it - talking to the factory they said they had seen both recent tanks with distortion and quite old bikes with no signs so very dependant on fuel, use, storage, fuel level while stored etc.

for UK riders who have not seen the prior discussions if you live in the main part of the England then Esso Supreme+ is the only E Free juice.

The sump plug seal is "profile seal" DIN 3869 M14X1.5 NBR. They're available, singularly could be a problem though. Mine has leaked on 1st reuse but a fibre washer from my old tins to the rescue for now. To me the groove in the plug is too deep, not enough seal protruding.

Hello Al , Some have gone to the Hex bolt type drain plug with magnet insert and aluminum crush washer with satisfactory results. A company called DIMPLE makes them or you can find it on AF1 racing website etc. Pricey though $35. USD .

Cheers Tony, I had an Al washer and the fibre one in my hand but chose the fibre as it is a better fit.
