The problem with the gas/petrol tank problem with a Norton is one day it's going to hurt somebody very badly. It is a problem that needs looking at.

I owned a Ducati GT 1000. The tank was manufactured by Acerbis. The tank material was not as much the problem as the design. Sure the ethanol made the tank swell (which is a problem) but it was the way that Ducati mounted the tank to the bike. As it swelled it came off the two front mounting shoes. That was the extent of it. I never felt like the bike was unsafe. The tank never flopped around. It was more annoying than anything else. In fact, at one point the tank swelled so much on the left, that I couldn't use the steering lock. But as far as safety, the tank was safe. On the Norton, the mounting brackets are different. I could be wrong, but I don't think that the tank could swell and loosen from the bike.

Interesting point, I watched a You Tube video created by Norton Canada. In it, a gentleman is describing the basic layout of a 961 Sport. He specifically mentions the Acerbis tank, and further states that it has been manufactured with nylon to prevent the dreaded swelling. Has anyone else seen this? Is this accurate?

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

I have seen that video. According to Acerbis they do not make the Norton tank. We can only hope the rest is true. The gentleman's name is Peter Howes, president Norton Canada. It is polyethylene that is reacting to ethanol, so if they are nylon we maybe ok.

Tank talk at 2:40. Video was published in 2013, so if there was a problem in the past, hopefully its been worked out. According to this guy, its nylon and completely impervious to ethanol. Here's hoping.....

The problems with plastic tanks on bikes and in boats was well documented by 2006-2007, hopefully Norton did their homework as I believe the final design work was done after this! That guy also thinks Norton tanks are made by Acerbis which according to the Acerbis rep I talked to is not the case! Acerbis did make the tanks for Ducati, Triumph, BMW, MV Augusta and others that have the ethanol problem!

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

Curtis, since your bike was made in 2013 whatever problems existed when the video was made are also on your bike. It would take many months if not a year or more to re-design and test a tank, and if a new supplier was needed a lot longer. Here's hoping there was no such problem!

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

What did Ducati do to resolve the problem. My friends 09 Duc 848 has a poly tank and he never had a problem. He never drained. He winterized with a full tank and Stabil. Also, on the video, there is no mention of a problem with the tanks. He said they are impervious to ethanol, so why would you mention " whatever problem existed" in 2013, BP?

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

I am a pessimist at heart and suffered with the ethanol problem for years . I never heard of Ducati completely fixing the problem. It usually takes 2 years to see the problem at 10%, the UK mostly uses 5% so there is no good test there. The video is wrong about the tank maker so I do not have a confidence level with the rest of the info. The video was made before any bikes were shipped to North. America, the heart of the problem. The US wants to increase the percentage, I don't think we,'ve seen the last of this. I do mention here's hoping no such problem existed!

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

Why is it so hard to determine who manufactured the tank, if not Acerbis, and the material used?

Has anybody inquired through their dealer? Would think UK dealers could chase this down fairly easy, no?

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

Much of the info I got from my dealer and the diistributer proved false. Perhaps one of our UK brothers could find out and share it with us?

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

^^ I can attest to that^^ Dealers are all full of it until you take ownership. Then they just dummy up. :x

Re: from the commando on, looks like triumph eventualy got t

I doubt I'll get a reply, or even an honest one, (may be top secret) but I fired off an email to the Acerbis Co. inquiring if there is any truth to Norton Canada's claim. Looking forward to it. support@acerbis.com

I have already contacted ACERBIS as stated in my post above, they said they do not make tanks for Norton! You can expect a prompt reply!

If this was easy it would have been answered already. I have asked 5 different entities and got 5 different answers!!!!

Wow. They emailed me back immedieately. Sorry BP. Must have missed that you already contacted them. They told me that Acerbis OEM is a different company to Acerbis and they don't have access to their list of products.
