Fitting a magneto to Maney crank cases

Nigel it don't worry me what anyone says about my maggie hanging where it hangs, I have thick skin, I been a JH fan for a long time and the 2 bikes I have had them hanging off the side and have never had a problem at all, having 23 years running time from both bikes and in that time have had so many knockers about where its sits, as I say everyone has their own opinions and it's usually the knockers who have never had one, ran one or know how good they are and they are so reliable.
From new I had problems with auto advance on points fail, had 2 EI fail and leave me stranded far away from home once, a JH maggie has never failed me or let me down.
Another thing also many compare the old Lucas maggie to a JH, the JHs is so far advance compared to a Lucas maggie and so much simpler in design and puts out one hell of a spark.
There are a lot of Nortons that I think are so wrong but I never criticize their owners of their pride and joy and what they done, it doesn't offend me but does upset me, if you don't like it all good, no need to say it's a f*ckin wart, that's just plain rude.
I say no more, but I will praise how good Joe Hunts are and help anyone who have questions or need help or advice about them.

It's all good we all have our opinions, myself know how well they are and to be honest I love showing it off the side of my Norton, you might think it's a mole and all but to me I don't care what anyone says about it to me it's a simple set up running straight off the cam, easy to time and best of all set to my timing marks 2 bolts to remove for any maintenance on the work bench, put back on in the same position and no need to reset the timing, so simple and the extra + it's running out in the cool fresh air.
No extra chain or advance unit as it fires up first kick without retarding it, it goes from slow revs to full revs without missing a beat and faster it spins the bigger the bang and spark plugs last so much longer because of that great big spark and they run so clean.
So really love it or hate it who care as I love it where it is and I don't take offence at all so to me it's a lovely wart and my Norton runs so well with it and that's the most important thing and first kick every time once started for the day it fires up on 1/2 a swing on the kicker while sitting on the seat without any real effort and will do that all day.
Just think of all the BS I would have to do to mount it behind the motor, the machining work, extra chain and sitting behind a very hot motor, no I keep my simple set up, ease of maintenance, after 35k miles with it I still running the same point's as well same spark plugs that haven't missed a beat.
So no offence at all as I am proud to show it off, than to hide it behind a very hot motor, sight unseen, leaking carbs that could cause a fire dripping on a spark souse.

Thats what makes this forum a great place. Each has their pride and joy. And you point out all the reasons for having a Mag there. But for me....well, the last thing I would want there if I dropped my bike. Some love the highriders. Some wouldn't be caught riding one.

Well the idea is to stay upright, well in theory anyway, having a JH on my old 81 Triumph Thunderbird in 9 years and 250k km on it not once did I go down, the Norton when I installed the JH and first day on the road from rebuild and first ride some stupid woman turned right in front of me but she had her left indicator on and I was starting to past her on her right, to avoid hitting her I laid the Norton down, the JH survived, then a few months later a car pulled out in front of me and my original front brake failed and threw me over the handle bars and the Norton crashed on the right side, the JH survived again, but I ended up with a broken arm and broken thumb, that was over 12 year ago and I upgraded the full front brake system while recovering, haven't been down since, lucky both accidents were slow speed.
I also have 2 soft bolts that mount the JH design to sheer off if I slide down the road on the maggie side, the 2 lay downs wasn't enough to sheer the 2 mounting bolts and only had to replace the front cover of the JH from the first accident.
I never think about coming off or laying the Norton down, but accidents do happen, 50 years of riding and over time have been down about 5 or 6 time in that time 3x from no fault of mine 2x from gravel on a tight corners and once taking my tyres to far over and the JH survived the 2x times it was on the Norton, so not bad for 50 years of riding on the road, I had more broken foot pegs and other light damage to my bikes from my spills, if I thought or worry about going down all time then I probably would go down more times, I never think of those things.

Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. Nigel hit it right on the head in Post #11 about being a race bike. That was my very same concern hanging that mag out like that.
I speak my mind and say it like it is (my faults). We can agree to dissagree on some small points but we are all here for Nortons and the love for riding them and helping others with like minds.

My mate Don who got me into Nortons and Featherbed frames at 17 years old, the Joe Hunt maggie I had on my old Triumph belonged to his Triton race bike and he gone down a few times with the JH, he was the one that told me to use soft mounting bolts, sliding down a race track at high speeds after crashing he preferred the JH to sheer off and cause less damage to it, but sliding down on a high speed crash I think there be more damage to the bike than the JH, they are a solid bit of kit, he ended up selling the JH from his Triton after a full rebuild, the alloy housing had a few battle scares but the housing was still solid.
He gave up on the racing not long after as he kept blowing up motors, he had all the great ideas and I learned from his mistakes when building my 850 Featherbed back in the 80s, he got rid of all his Norton's and went the Triton road, but the funny thing he builds his own one piece Norton cranks for his Triumph motors.

Decision made to go with the mag.
No battery.
No track side battery charging issues.
No flat battery DNFs
No alternator.
Massive spark.
Only ONE wire on the entire bike (to the kill switch).

My own dyno experiments in the past have shown little to no impact with the ign being a few degrees either side of nominal. So, with a good quality and correctly adjusted timing chain, I’m not worried about cam mounted ign.

Unto each his own.

All I can say it's the best ignition I have ever run on my Norton with such a big fire in the belly without any troubles at all and I ran a few systems in the over 46 years of ownership, so no need to clean up isle 9.
As I say one hell of a spark, first kick every time, min wiring (less problems), no heavy battery or flat battery to worry about, ease of maintenance, did I mention first kick every time, so really over 12 years on my Norton without doing anything to it in that time, I pull the front cover off every time I do a service to check the point and lube the felt pad for the point cam, other than that haven't touched the JH, plugs look as good as the day I put them in 12 years ago, did I mention first kick every time.
Funny thing everyone who seems to criticizes my JH hanging off my timing side seems to be Americans, funny that.

LOL. Time to turn the record over. I think it is starting to skip.

My comment was for Nigel. I'm secure in my dislike for a magneto hanging off the side, not defending it. Doesn't mean squat.
