Ordered the dr voodoo indigo flakes in .015. It will be interesting to see what they look like.

The description says: "hex" flakes... were the originals SQUARE in shape? Doubt that it would matter, but that stuff jumps out at me.

I just found an original gelcoat lh side cover at baxter cycle. Really good shape and perfect for color matching!

Those painted tanks are stunning! Bass boat, 70's metal flake nirvana!
I seriously wanted an alloy tank for my 75' interstate but I'm wanting to get a beautiful Golden Bronze tank and covers painted. Can I get some contact info for the painter who did those tanks?

I missed a "golden bronze" 750 in Fl a few years ago, my brother bought his 850 the following days afterwards. That orange looking bike has been stuck on my mind for 3 years now, I missed a hogslayer bike a few months ago then decided to say F it and buy the best bike I could find close by, done deal...

Rabers in San Jose still have some new S type side panels in various metalflake colours.

I did them.
I do have tanks & panels, but unfortunately I'm in the UK
Just finished a Golden Bronze job - a real pain getting the right match, but worth it.
I did my Proddy Racer in the metalflake orange, which looks good, but isn't 'correct'. I've pondered doing it again, but as it was never an original PR colour I'm not losing any sleep just yet.

Here's the Golden Bronze sidepanel 'in-progress' matched against an original tank

Here's the orange, in the middle of some 'S' panels. Close, but not close enough ...

OMG that's beautiful! I really like the red too. I need to find someone here in the states to do this. I love that big heavy flake?

Here's a close up of the original FF Blue S panel under the grommet. I'm sure the gel coat on F/G is a totally different process than what is used for flake on metal these days. You can see there are black flakes in it along with silver and blue flakes, the blue looks like a base color, but when the blue is sanded off the base appears as a silver metalic color. At least that's what I remember on mine when I stripped it. I think you just have to do the best you can these days and B+ seems to be doing a fine job. I wish I could get him to do mine. I'm sure the forum painter, Brent, will do a good job too.

It has been previously commented here that we are not entirely convinced that that is an example of an original unaltered fireflake blue ?
Other samples of fireflake blue gelcoat seen around - and linked to in threads here - have not shown the multi colored flakes.
So the jury is still out on that one ?

Well, since I bought the bike in 72 and it was apparently in pretty much stock condition with the 750 'S' side panels and decals, why would that be in question? I certainly haven't changed the side panels since then and they didn't magically change in the meantime. But it may be, like others have said, the paint depended on the contractor and the day. I just don't see the issue. I was just trying to provide a sample.

What color basecoat did you use for the Fireflake Golden Bronze?, it looks very nice. Did you tint the clear?

We've have had this exact discussion before.
Other samples don't seem to show the multicolor flakes...

Sure its possible thats what they used some days,
but it would be nice to see other examples the same ?

I will be following this thread, I just picked up a low mileage 1970 750 R that has and will need the Fire Flake purple paint once I source a steel Roadster tank. I am sure I will have to wait until after Christmas for that. But it has sat for over 40 years and it is a very long way from finished.

Thanks, I'm pleased with the match, and it was a fight!
Black base, no tint in the clear. I probably went through four different sources of flakes until I got the colour right.
As far as I'm aware, the only tinted flake Norton used was the red over silver gelcoat on early fastbacks, and probably the 'R' and 'S' types.
The other flakes were self-coloured AFAIK

The finish on my project 70 R roadster is pretty much burned off and it looks like it had a silver base to the Fire Flake purple paint job. I will be taking the tank and side panels to a automotive paint specialist and see what they say.

What was left of the Fireflake on my '70 "S" was silver base and flake. There was a little red left but it wasn't as deep as the flake's themselves.

Purple Haze leaves lasting impression so Peel is more Purple with fine sparkle than anything else. Would be neat to do one with ghost flames.

I believe Roman Fireflake Purple had medium sized flakes of differing colours not just silver. I recall reds in the mix. :|

I think it had a red flake in it. Bass boat suppliers are a good source

There are no flakes other than silver in the NOS fireflake roman purple sidecover posted just above ?
Fibreglass, so in the gelcoat, others may vary.....

The blue one looks to be only one shade of flakes too ?
Also in the gelcoat.
