finally got my tank and side covers put back on from being painted and had a nice enough day to ride!!!

had a little bit more of oil leak than Id like, looks like most is coming from primary so I’ll have a look into that but man did it feel great to be on the Norton again!!

It does look nice. Who painted it?
Thanks! It was a family friend, he does auto body and paint for a living and has painted several of my fathers old harleys. This one and my other project I’m working on we’re his first Norton’s he has done.

That looks like a proper 70 'S'. Where are you?

Could be the drive chain oiler. Oil runs down to the primary case joint and tracks along to the lowest point.

Primary seal is a good source of oil, I always smeared silicone on that gasket, also the hole in the front of the oil tank in the air filter. Leaks down on top of the gearbox and then follows to the bottom. Chain oiler was the first thing I removed. You can buy a new chain every year for $40, or at least used to. Make sure not to fill that oil tank above the bottom mark. Wet sumping and over filling will cause oil come out of that hole in the air filter.

History on the bike, please?

I can see for sure that the primary seal is leaking but also looks like some oil from higher up also. I will check the hole in the oil tank I’m pretty sure I filled the tank to the top mark. The chain oiler was deleted before I purchased the bike but that does not mean oil is not leaking from there I will check that also. I bought the bike I’d say about 5-6 years ago from a gentleman( I can’t remember his name of the top of my head) in Virginia near Chesapeake Bay Area if memory serves correct. He change the tank to steel and had it painted red.im fairly certain he was second owner and it only has a little over 3,000 original miles, the frame still has a factory oil recommendation sticker on it

If you filled it to top mark when cold, then probably pumped a bunch back out of the sump when hot and overflowed. Check oil level when hot.

I tried today but my battery was at 9.4 volts. Recharging now. I don't understand why because I had the fuse out during the winter laydown.

Yes, never fill to the top mark. Check oil when it's been running for a while and for sure you see oil pumping back into the oil tank by removing the oil cap. Everytime I start the bike I check that, it means you have oil to the top end among other things. You'll see oil squirting out of that tube that's visible in there. After a few minutes it should start to clear up and run sort of solid oil. You can check the oil right after a run, but don't let it sit and then check it. Keep it on the low mark unless it burns excessive oil. Keeping it full or too full only makes for oil problems.

Remove the primary, clean the grove and cover and just smear silicone on that round gasket or get a new one. Then smear a bit of silicone on the cover flat and put together. Don't overtighten or you will bend the cover. I think there's a torque value on that. Might want to check that the primary is not too full of oil, best way is replace it.

I have a cure for that hole in the oil tank, but it's rather complicated. You can seal that hole off, but then you need to 'breathe' the oil tank to atmosphere some other way or you'll start pumping oil out of all the other seals/engine.

Yes it was most certainly cold when filled.

Yeah I’m going to pull the primary cover and use some silicone, also have a look at the oil tank to see if any is coming from there. I think I’m going to refresh the front forks while I’m at it minimum of fresh oil. They seemed a bit more bouncy than they should be

The primary inner ( support post ) , must be shimmed to prevent any warpage. Then the outer will fit perfect with no leaks.

Yes, this is also just as important, but not quick to accomplish. You could try running a straight edge along the inner primary surface to see if you can detect any warpage. Like a good carpenter's square.

Thank you for that head up I will check for warpage and shim the support post, that’s seem fairly easy to achieve
