In that case, what Norvil lists as the "06-3556" washer could very well be the 06-4748 item, therefore their "06-4748 nylon washer" isn't an Andover Norton part at all!

That has been my suspicion from the start!

A last contribution from Nick at Andover Norton (I was hoping he'd sign up and wade in himself)

"Thanks for the background. I am always amazed at how much trouble people are
prepared to waste trying to make "improvements" to tried and tested
products. The problem is compounded of course by suppliers of pirate parts
using factory part numbers, and the recipients of such parts may not be
aware that they haven't got the real thing.
The specification of any component is defined within the factory part number
and it therefore follows that the part number will change when significant
changes are made to it - a point made by one of the forum contributors. In
the case of the isolastic washers 06.0578 is the original polyurethane type.
These proved unsatisfactory because of their high wear rate (particularly in
the front mounting, which catches most of the weather) and were replaced by
06.3556. New material = new part number, and so when the centre hole was
enlarged the part number changed again to 06.4748.
Just a couple of final points:
1) Dealers are primarily interested in making a profit. Ask yourself why a
certain dealer recommends his own version of a particular part - is it
really better than the genuine factory item or could it possibly be the case
that it earns him a better return?
2) If it is misinformation that you are looking for there is no better place
to find it than on an internet forum!
All the best, and thanks for your interest,
Nick "

I obviously don't agree with his comments about forums cos I'm here. Sure there's plenty of misinformation but there's also a huge amount of knowledge and experience.

The internet just allows the immediate consolidation of various viewpoints. Pre-forums you might only get your info from the local dealer (who may or may not know what they are talking about) and possibly other local owners (who also may give you differing info). Now people from around the world have a chance to chime in and they also may or may not be right. But the forum allows quicker distilling of information so you hopefully get a "righter" answer than before. By the time we got to LABs last post it was pretty much confirmed what was happening with the part numbers.

I just ordered last week all new ISO rubber snubbers front and rear from Phil at Fair Spares.

Phil says he will send me the "nylon" washers. He claims these are the current replacement.

Wish me luck, the front will be easy, but the rear will be done without removing anything, all in the frame, fiddly and time consuming, but should go ok!

No doubt he would, as there's a tie-up between Fair Spares America and The Norvil Motorcycle Co.

Norvil used to trade under the name of Fair Spares!

Would someone on the list in the UK please call Les and ask him. According to their site:

"We DO NOT Answer Any Technical Queries Via Email - This includes "Will It Fit", "What Is It Made Of", "What Is The Thread Size" & "What Is The Part Number Of"

"For Technical Information please contact Les Emery via telephone (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday) on +44 (0) 1543 278008 between the hours of 16.00 & 17.00 British Time or fax on +44 (0) 1543 274775."

I didn't expect this thread to go on so long. Very interesting, I will be happy to see the end of it. I haven't decided on which shims yet.
