Same as you I've put everything back together and using the kickstart only. Word from the Empire Rally is that there are newer systems in the works from a few sources so I'm just sitting back and waiting to see what develops.

Yep, Alton is woking on an upgrade to the Norton starter, stay tuned (well, there isn't much of a choice anyway since many of the original parts are no longer available)

Hi Jean,

Thanks for the info. is Alton working on a new starter motor or a new starter 'system' replacing some of the original parts, sprag etc.?

Many Thanks

Kevin

I know they are working on a replacement motor and possibly a replacement sprag, but I have no further information, once I know, I will post it on the forum.

Bonjour Jean,

Merci beaucoup

Starter problems or should I say sprag clutch problems are result of backfire or timing issues . The anti backfire device should deal with the problem , but I suspect it does it so fast by the time the bellevue washers pre loaded to 50 ft /lbs for many years reacts its too late . I do not see how oil either EP90 gear box oil or the primary oil , which gets extra from the old wet sumping problem could harm the sprag , as thes sprags are also used in automatic transmissions they need lubrication . Any way I had a similar problem , managed to source a very cheap supply for sprags , these new type are much better they are 18 rolers but the outer cage has three centralising clips . I am currently trialing these sprags so far so good . And by the way I just hand polished the gear and spocket surfaces and yes they had some dents caused by the rollers when they go inside out but smoothed over as best could and presto so far so good saved heaps of bucks as well at about $25.00 AUD which included shipping (if the backfire mechanisim is seviced as per the OLD BRITTS procedure) its worth it Norton Dave .

Hi Norton Dave, good to know about the sprag you are testing, obvious question, where can you get these $25 AUD sprags!!! I'd buy a few just to have them in stock just in case!!

Kevin

gee whiz I wish this Norton Dave would reply. He did allude to automatic transmission in the $25 AUD claim so maybe it's a Borg Warner or similar item.
Hello Norton Dave are you out there or are you out there?
As to the previously asked question of machining the races, well maybe it's not advisable if using the same size sprag. The specs are on the Renold website ( part REGP 4127 (C3). Very close for work at home. No one so far admits to having reworked the gears.
Get the igniting timing straightened out by whatever means needed because otherwise using the e-start with any kick back and it will happen again soon.
I wonder what the damage would be without the anti kickback device.
All the best.

Why don't you try contacting him through the site's PM or e-mail service?

Hello L.A.B.,
since I have you on the 'phone, per se,
What damage did you incur when the sprag in your photo disintegrated?
All the best.

Will some engineer out there design a sprag clutch that has a stronger cage to resist collapsing inwards on itsef ?

per a recent email from Norton Dave, the $20.- sprag is still being evaluated. Still no source provided.

now for a real life question:
does any one reading have real life experience cleaning up the engine sprocket bore or the the crank gear shaft. These are the two working surfaces for the sprag.
There are small indentations on these caused by ign timing issues. Can they be cleaned up and to what extent is oversize and undersize tolerable and still work correctly?

I have the diametral specs recommended by the various sprag manufacturers but hows about a real life excursion.
Anyone?
All the best.
