I'm trying to fit a new spring to the side (prop) stand on my 1970 Roadster. Can anyone with a similar bike tell me which way round the spring should be fitted?

The AN site seems to suggest that the shorter end with the smaller hook goes upper-most - towards the hole in the frame plate.

However this looks like it will foul on the bracket?

Could anyone with a similar bike have a look and let me know how this fits?

Thanks!

Will this help? It looks a bit confusing because of the center stand behind it, but it appears that the crook in the prop stand is at the top, so when it swings it clears the pin assembly. Also notice that the pin/clip arrangement is not real safe. I put a lock nut and bolt on mine as you can see. If you want to safely keep the original parts, drill a hole and install a grub screw into the pin. If you need a better pic I can get one. I also glued a piece of hose on the frame where the stand hits so it doesn't dig into the paint/finish.

Don't seem to be able to load the pic. I'll try later or I can email it to you.

Early Side Stand Spring Orientation

Many thanks for the reply DogT. The picture is very helpful. I am looking at the new part just arrived from AN (06.0768) which I am sure is right, but it doesn't have the kink that your's seems to have. I will go over to my garage sometime this week and try to dig out the old rusty spring, and see if this is different. But from what I can see in your photo, it looks like the longer arm with the larger hook goes to the top, with the shorter arm and smaller hook to the bottom. If necessary I can probably add the kink to the spring with some pliers.

I will take a look and report back for completeness.

By the way, thanks again for your Phoenix thread - it has been a great help to me in putting together my bike which although a Roadster is identical in many ways.

I just looked at mine and the long straight section is to the top. As far as the bend, it may have to be formed like Les says so it clears the pin/bolt.

Have now installed the new spring in the orientation you suggested, DogT, and all seems fine. Although the new part is straight and not kinked, it passes over the pin fine. I did manage to find the old spring and it definitely has a slight bend in the upper section like your's. However I am wondering if this was just induced through years of use rather than being part of the design.
Incidentally, AN have replaced the original pin and clips with a new part which has larger proper circlips and larger grooves. I have fitted this and will see how it holds up.
Given the complete faffing involved in fitting the stands and springs I wanted to get this right first time to avoid having to take it apart and try again. Thanks again.
