Deer oh deer

Ashley sounds like it similar to here , the deer while numerous , don’t usually write vehicle off and cause fatalities , speaking of brick shithouse , try a Moose or black bear on for size , you hit either at speed you die that in a car or 1/2 ton …. happens couple times a year , way more deer hit …skunks really suck if you strike one too ….

Come to Australia we have over 40 million + kangaroos double our population we also have deer, emu's, cattle, boars and everything that want to jump out in front of us and night times the worst why do you think all 4x4s and semi trucks have big bull bars on the front, give some protection.
Roo meat is one of the most tender and low colisrole lowing low fat meat around but mention culling and the goody two shoe get up in arms, animal rights people OS crack it but really they have no idea how over populated they are.
Then you get the big red kangaroos they stand 7 foot tall and built like a brick sh#t house, roos feed on the side of roads at dask and dawn for the best grasses, I even seen them grazing in our local suburbs but they are a bit more shy.
Never drive at night on outback roads unless you are hunting them.

Yep I've ridden a few miles in Oz day and night there's quite a few things to hit
But it's a slightly bigger country I noticed with fewer people and fewer cars

Same....years ago 87" travellin across the Nullarbor to Perth at night in some places you spot some headlights coming towards you and ages later you finally pass each other.. that piece of country also has the longest straight track of railroad in the world....and its boring as...

Yes we are wide and vast in size and distants, I think the longest straight bit of railway track on the Nullarbor is 475km then they throw in a few bends to wake up the drivers lol even the trains have their fair share of kills on the tracks, it might look deserterlet, boring but widelife everywhere.
The Northern Territory use to have open speed limits outback but they had to put a limit on open roads to 130km to many killed from road kills and lots of outback roads are unsealed as well no fencing we also have one of the longest rabbit proof fence in the world.
We might not have big black bears here but we have wild camels, horses as well water bafflo in the NT and wild cattle running loose and most cattle stations are not in acres or hectares but 100s of square kms and you always see lots on destroyed vehicles on the side of the road.
In the day outback truckies if they broke down or got bogged they set up camp beside the trucks as someone will come along, never leave the vehicle as that's when people die, but these days with satellite phones and emergency safety device's help is near, we also have the flying doctors Aus wide and they will land on roads for crash recuses.
Just look at a map of Australia and see where the major population live 70% or more live close to coastal areas.

A mate of mine hit a goat on his 1000cc
T160 Trident years ago....it made a real mess of his face (still visible today) and his newly commissioned bike 🐐
Hunting in NZ is very popular and has kept the numbers at a controllable level
Hobot hit a goat. Goat 0, Hobot 1
It was a pet goat though.
Still you don't want to hit goat or deer. I was coming around a bent on the blue ridge PW and a bambie was in the middle of the road. It turns tail and the mother comes out of nowhere and almost clobbers me. If I had not slowed for the fawn we would have collided.

I can't see the photo in the article which is a shame but it was around 2007 and he was deffiently in that part of the country when the accident happened.. .My mate Phil (the rider) was a tattoo artist and carried all his gear in his rear panniers up and down the country...I just done a search of all head lines and it seems to be the only one reported to date of any seriousness

I try to not ride at night as the deer are Thick around here in my part of Illinois. I’ve never hit one on my bike but I‘ve nailed one with every single other vehicle I’ve owned. I’ve hit multiple deer at different times with the same vehicle! The insurance company hates me. Fuck ‘em!

I like my sheep dripping in mint sauce
New Zealand actually produces more venison for the world market than most countries but we dont have the accident rate like like other countries it seems
This is a common occurrence going through the back roads...

Here in NJ there is a township near the state capital that is extremely wealthy and exclusive
( home to an Ivy League university ). Bambi lovers imposed a ban on hunting. Didn’t take long to rescind that ban after all the exotic expensive automobiles were hitting deer and all the expensive shrubbery around the mansions was getting chewed to bits .

A very common scenario.
Nothing pisses of the lady of the house more than to walk outside and see yesterdays plantings chewed down to the soil.

"Forest rats" 🤣

I t-boned a deer and killed it on my 996S. Didn't do me a lot of good either. Ended up grinding half my water pump off and did over $9K in parts alone damage. Ruined my leathers. Made for a long day.

My advice is don't hit one on a motorcycle. If you see one there are probably more in the brush. Trying to speed past deer when you get close and it looks like they are going to move away from the road is not a good idea. They will inevitably jump right in front of you when you have nowhere to go and are least expecting it. If I hit one on the Norton it would probably be the last thing I did. I actually slow down a lot now when I see them.

I can't imagine riding close to a bunch of deer running next to me at the same pace. I would actually stop in that scenario and let them pass on ahead given what I've experienced. Hitting the deck at 55mph or more does not feel that good. The bike will come to a stop but you won't until you hit the ground. Flying like superman without the super part.

I got told off for using a word like that. But I was talking about a wanker.

Someone mentioned Australia larger than Canada : for the record -
Australia : 7,741,220 sq.kms, 3.32 people per sq. km … total pop 23 million

Canada : 9,984,670 sq. kms, 4.19 people per sq.km … total pop 35 million

Canada 2.24 million sq.kms larger

Russia is larger than either of above , not sure on current population , would guess it shrinking 😉

Yes Australia is not the largest but we are surrounded by water, a very large island, we are also the driest continent and most of our population live close to the coast, inland Australia is very in habital in a lot of the country with very high temps in our summers, but travel inland at the right time of year and its a outstanding experience with the colour of the landscape and wildlife just pull up at night and be careful we have a lot of things that will eat you.
But don't be put off from coming over as we are a friendly bunch, love a beer and a pretty safe place to be.

Zackly'.
If there is one on the road side you can be 99% sure there are more.
And they will always do the unpredictable. Like run across only to return a few seconds later.
If you spot their beady little eyes glowing in your headlight further ahead slow way down and let them run around in circles until the finally decide move out of the "get run over and die while you destroy my bike" zone.

Last fall my cousin was driving very slowly at dusk knowing that there was a heavy deer population in the wooded area he was travelling and still! Two of them ran head first into the passenger side doors of his new Tundra, damage was over $4000.
He never saw them until the damage was done.

Guy I worked with told me story bout his Grnd Dad during depression , one Sat. night full of rum he stepped out to have a leak and saw a moose by the barn , he fetched his rifle and dropped the moose with one shot … in morning , the moose had turned into his neighbour’s work horse , he had no money so worked the price of the dead horse off doing barn chores for owner all winter …. they remained friends , haha!

My friend was late for work one morning, which was very unusual. When the foreman asked why he said there had been an accident near his home, a man hit a deer on a motorcycle. Sounds like B S said the foreman. I don't think a deer can ride a motorcycle.
