Hi, before I send items off to the chrome platers, would someone please post me a photo of the number plate end of the commando S rear guard as I'm unsure whether or not someone has hacked a bit of mine, also, would someone kindly measure the distance from the 2 bottom number plate bracket attachment holes to the end of the guard, many thanks, David

David,
I can measure my recently bought original rear mudguard.
I guess it is in original shape.
Will post the dates this evening.
Uli

Hi Uli, thanks for the reply. As a matter of interest, where did you manage to obtain an S rear guard? David

There are at least 2 styles of S type rear mudguards. One is attached by a plate off the web below the large center spine where the capacitor mounts and the other one, earlier I think, mounts off a strap between the top shock top bolts. The one that mounts off the web has a flat spot on the front, the other is round. The S type also has a C section to the curve as opposed to the newer ones that have a D section and has a small flat on the outermost circumference.

The newer chromed looking one is a 71 guard.
The dimension you are looking for is 1 1/16" from the bottom of the elongated hole to the edge of the guard measures straight down or as a plumb line would be off the hole from the bike.

I have more pictures if desired.

Thanks for the photos DogT. Would you have a photo of the number plate end of the guard please, David

Well, I am in the Facebook Norton Commando group and someone sold a 1970 Roadster in parts.
Looking at the pics I noticed the rear guard had the cease for the air pump fixed to the right rear frame loop
Finally I bought it via Ebay.
Ok, it is not perfect, needs polishing or better rechroming, but it is a genuine part for the S.
Haven´t fixed it yet and sorry, I forgot to take the measurements of the guard.
Will be in the workshop tomorrow.
Show us some pics of your restoration, please.

BTW:
I went to a meeting of english bikes in Bueriswilen, Switzerland last weekend.
A guy showed up with an unrestored (mostly)1970 Commando S in Fireflake Royalblue.
He said he bought off Ebay in USA for about 4.000 Euros plus shipping.

Sure.

I modified this guard a long time ago when I wanted to put a larger tire on the rear, but I did some restoration work on it with the oxy/acet and a lot of bondo. That's why it's painted. But the holes you see are in original configuration, I only enlarged the holes when I modified it so I could raise the guard higher.

That's a real good example of a 69/70 S type that rivera posted. Mine is mostly restored in original look with some mostly internal mods for upgrades. If you search around from my picture link, you can find a lot of S type pictures of various 69/70 Norton things.

That guard that mounts with the bracket off the web I sold to a fella here on the forum in Belgium about a year ago. I bought it thinking it would fit mine, but mine mounts off the bracket between the shock tops. I modified a 71 to put on mine so I could get the chrome look.

Here you go:

Distance from middle of the lower mounting hole to egde of mudguard is app. 1.358 inches.

Many, many thanks to all who went to the trouble of posting all that relevant information, what a great forum, David

Hi guys, as my restoration is still at the exploded parts stage, all I would be able to post would be nuts, bolts and parts waiting to be renovated, rest assured, once I have something to brag about, I'll be contributing to the gallery, David

Thanks, I may keep an eye on that one. Mine is almost beyond repair and that one looks not un-restorable and includes the newer type bracket.
