My sump-plug spanner is marked 7/8 Whitworth

The oil tank filter is 1 1/8" Across Flats (or at least that's what I use).

I'm a little puzzled that you seem to have some 'non-fits' as mine is comprehensively catered for by a set of old Whit and a set of AF sizes.

Nortons always tended to use lots of 'special' fasteners and it would seem that on the engine particularly, the change to AF was not straightforward as they couldn't simply replace all those reduced-hexagon items with standard. The reduced hex 1/4" whit. nuts on the gearbox cover are a joy to work with. To my mind, those little idiosyncracies are part of what makes them special.

I use a Metrinch set - expensive but works on 99% of the fasteners
