Yeah, it's like movie critics - there are some that if they rave about a movie, I KNOW it's a definite miss for me! So they are, in a way, just as valuable as a critic I always agree with. :)

an expensive add on at that.

Gidday Andy

been following this for a while. mate I dont understand what you mean by chromised.

are you refering to a straight carbon/chrome steel or an alloy containing other stuff as well. I would have thought all manufacturers would have some chrome in the plate and pin material to promote hardenability.
the inference here is that most manufacturers use a plain high carbon steel with no chromium added. In keeping their costs down I would guess that plain carbon/ chrome would be what they use indeed.

Am I correct in my assumptions .

Does this new standard specify material composition, hardness and tensile strength of the materials, , heat treatments, etc as well as all the other stuff..

In Australia, I can get Tsubaki 10B1 chain easily. this is direct from Tsubaki Australia. They assure me the quality is better than the industrial chain from the bearing stores. ( They sell mainly Renolds ..

What do you reckon about Tsubaki.
Best wishes Bradley

Tsubaki has always been a good product but the 10B-1 is industrial. Dont panic tho
it is a good chain, although the iwis is better :D :D :D :D :D . As I have stated
on many occasions the bulk of chains on the market match DIn but that does not
make them "good". Best thing about DIN is all the cons and cranks fit all brands.

I spent some time in OZ training people in chain and because of its location in the world
the amount of cheap product was amazing so believe some of the hype as the DIN standard
encompasses a very wide range of quality.

I am not a rocket scientist so the exact chrome content is a mystery to me. All I know
is that proper cam chains have always, or always have, a high chrome content to give
good durability although the base steel is more expensive. Most makers have a "chromised"
product but is an extra feature.

Andy, thank you for your reply Bradley

Having maintained chains for over 25 years, I have really never bothered to know what goes into a chain, clean, set-up and lubricate and re-check was most of my input. Like many, I have gained much from this thread, and may highlight the fact that recently I have recently come across issues where one chain was replaced with the current equivalent - it did even compare to the old one! and the latest a 20 metre long chain of which one link would crush a commnado was procured and did not fit properly either - big cost cock-up!
Material composition is another area of engineering being rationalised as well. I needed a cocking pawl as we seemed to be breaking more than previously. The company that made them said we can no longer get the steel as the pawl weighs 8 grams and the minimum order was 8Te, and it was from a steel producer outside the UK, I imagine it is the same for the cahin manufacturers.

Mad,

As I have said on many occassions heavy duty chain is a bad idea.

Dont take my words for look at the major bike manufacturers like Suzuki
Honda Yamaha etc etc. 630 chain which is huge and very heavy with a massive
breaking load , was used for a short time on "super" bikes.....very soon to be
replaced by 530 and even 520.

Quality in the case of chain overides quantity...or so my wife says.

Have a happy Christmas all of ya.

Just this past weekend I installed a new chain on my Norton project .The chain I purchased had 100 links. My bike has stock gearing with a 19 tooth up front. I needed to cut one link off to make the chain work. When done the adjuster was about in the middle of the slot.

try sending him a PM

just click on his name when you are logged in and it ought to show how to send him an email

More and more Commando owners are finding out that the iwis is good and comes with
crank link if needed.

My contact number in on my web site so just google The Chain Man and up I pop.

I am away for a couple of weeks hard earned rest but back on 27th Feb

Can anyone help me with a quick way of getting straight to this part of the forum, in order for me to send that link to others who may not normally get on this site.
all the best. Kerinorton

The way I've done it is to open up at home page, or a main section or a specific thread then cut/paste the URL. URL's for subject line threads only open up at page 1 so the receiver much scroll pages to read further.

I bought the Iwis chain from Andy and installed it yesterday...I had bought a 530 chain from a local bike shop and it hit the case up front and didn't leave room for adjustment...The new iwis chain does not hit the case and I have plenty of adjustment left, because of the half link...This chain highly recommended..

How can I resist Andy, I've ping ya for a deal on four sealed 530 chains of 100 links each. Peels HD cam chain is off to get Cryo tempered with some new chainsaw blades and JSM pistons pens and ring sets. I get like 3x's more edge holding and link wear slack resistance on chain saws w/o stopping to retension so don't throw chains off. It feels like using up wax blades on the ones I cheaped out on in haste to use. Try it I think you'll like it for the cost which shipping is most of it.
