You threw so many numbers about we are all confused....

What happened to the (triple) post here that explained some of it... ?

It also sounds like import approval is no longer required in advance, but is done after ??

It went:-

Pay for gov import docs and GST based on landed cost (cost of goods plus freight etc). Pay local engineering cert ($250) and blue slip plus pink slip for rego.

No duty on something this old

I did not know why it posted 3 times so I killed it.

Make sure they are clean too, or the Dept of Ag and Quarantine may insist they are steam cleaned/sterilized, which costs.

YES.

Wooden crates need to be made with treated lumber.

Thank you to all the people who answered my query on shipping companies. Great information.

I'm thinking about how to structure the actual transaction itself ie the actual exchange of money for goods when doing the transaction when organising from long distance.

I can see that buying via US Ebay provides a level of protection for the buyer. I'm wondering how people approach a purchase from other sources such as Craigslist where there is the overseas buyer is not able to turn up in person to do the COD transaction? The overseas buyer will be vulnerable during the period between paying the seller till when his shipping company collects the bike. The seller could refuse to provide title, or even keep the cash without parting with the bike. Either situation aint pretty, especially the latter.

At first I thought using the transport company to carry out the transaction may be a solution, but on second thoughts I doubt transport companies are set up to provide this sort of service. In the absence of having a contact in the US who can do the transaction the only way I can think of doing a craiglist type purchase is to use a service such as escrow.com. It would add expense to the purchase (escrow.com charge 3.25%) but at least using a service like this you can negotiate to only release money to the seller only after goods and title has been received. Anyone else got thoughts or ideas on a way to approach this?

Regards
Claverton

Claverton,

There are many Access Norton members in the U.S. who are on this site. At the very least, maybe one of them could inspect the bike for you. Possibly, a member could act as your representative and complete the transaction, including delivery to a shipper. Wouldn't hurt to put a request out.

Hi all. I am new member. I am trying to source a couple of 74 commandos in the US to bring to Australia for a project in my "old age". Over here the prices are around 12000 to 18000 for anything and it looks like sourcing from the US is a much better option. Any help on web sites to look at, price range etc would be great.

Found it.

DO NOT USE "EZAutoShippers"

Completely unreliable. My client had to pay MANY additional fees to eventually receive his bike SIX MONTHS after it left the 'states. They repeatedly lied to him and jerked him around.

Hi;
I am willing to help you with any purchase in the western USA. I'm retired, have a diesel pick-up and bike trailer. I have done this once before for an Aussie and have shipped my own bike from the US to England and back so have experience.
Cheers, Frank

If you find a bike nearer the Texas coast, I can recommend an excellent overseas shipper than does relatively inexpensive "roll-on, roll-off" bike shipments. I used them 2 years ago with excellent results to England.

Hi Grandpaul;
For my 70th (God willin' and the crik don't rise) I'm planning on attending the Dakar in South America, shipping my KTM there and then spending some time seeing that part of the world.
I went to college in Texas and lived there many years and have lots of friends there and would love to ship it from there (LA is painful). Would you send me the company's details. Cheers, Frank

When i was looking at this I found a number of bikes for sale that were VERY well priced. The vendor offered to do the deal using Google wallet, a new clearing house system run by Google. And they offered to arrange shipping. Beware these are FRAUDS. They had BS stories. I found the ads on a couple of web sites and with a bit of surfing discovered they were cut and pasted form SOLD bikes on E bay. Don't get caught.

A friend of mine regularly ships bikes from the states. He goes there are collects them until he has a container full. He then sells them in his business Central Motorcycles in Huntingdale Vic. and they are not too badly priced, however he really knows the market.

GST is charged on the cost of the bike + transport (cost about $2500 to get it off the wharf) All up bike and freight was about $8500 + the $2500 wharf fees
Then came the restoration
Back then the $ was buying 67 pence (about 12p less now)
You do need approval and I would recommend buying from a reputable dealer and getting approval BEFORE it is shipped
Some carriers will arrange approval but there would be an extra charge
Mine came from the UK and the dealer sent it before I got approval (Dealers have the best shipping rates)
Thankfully the approval came before the bike otherwise I would have been up for $200 + a day storage until approval was granted and if approval is not granted either the bike is shipped back at your expense or destroyed at your expense
In order for approval to be granted it must have a clear title and be close enough to standard to pass as concourse
Anything that has had a frame alteration for instance could pose problems

It is a pretty harrowing experience and I don't envy your position but in saying that after restoring the bike to its present state I have absolutely no regrets
In the end I could have bought a pretty good one here for what it ended up costing but I would not know what I know now

Good luck

Jed

What are these transport costs and fee's to get bikes cleared.
You only pay GST based on what the bike cost. ? (pre 1989)
All up cost including any GST $900 including processing in the USA,import approval, shipping, clearance from the landed port and in my case delivery to a bonded warehouse on the Central coast.

I paid GST on the purchase price + shipping cost. (as is normally the case) I did the deal myself and the dealer in the UK supplies the transport which was about $400 less than any other quote from a privateer for a 1977 Commando
Similar prices were quoted by US dealers at the time
Phoenix cargo was the company and they were fantastic (about ($865 including crate)
I'm sure you don't mean to be misleading but you seem to be saying with import approval, shipping ,handling etc $900 was the gross cost
If you paid $900 all up then that would mean the bike cost pretty much nothing. They are cheaper in the US but not that cheap

Wharf fees were the killer and quickly added up (not exactly $2500 but near enough including GST) If you did not get charged port fees then I would dearly like to know how shipping, GST and handling costs added up to $900!
Maybe you have a relative on the wharfs, that may explain it

If you did not see these charges then either your bike was part of a container load or the costs were added somewhere else. $900 all up? should have bought a shipload

Cheers
