Bushman's Rebuild Update

Cometic will make any gasket known to man.
I just sent them a complete paper set for an A10, a couple of dozen gaskets.
They duplicated that in their nitrile rubber on thin aluminium type for about $200
These are ( almost) the only gaskets I use now. Seal much better than paper and are reusable many times.

They would happily make all 961 gaskets, you just need a mostly intact original to send along. Once they scan it, they have it locked in to their data base for future production.

Super, that would solve the gasket sourcing.
O-rings and seals can be sourced from catalogs if the types required are known.
Same for bearings.

hmmmm..........oh........nothing. You guys can figure out what I'm thinking.

What a sad read.
Richard's help has been priceless to myself and I'm sure to many others.
Without his input both via this forum and private emails my norton would still be pissing oil everywhere.
Richard together with CNW have made my norton a much more reliable machine.
I personally can't thank Richard enough for his patience, knowledge and input concerning these machines.

Well thank you kindly!

Well, I can surely say, this work has all paid off.

I had a decent ride today, bike is SO different. Mechanical noise is gone, the foot shaking vibration on the right hand peg is gone and I have found a whole new range of clean smooth power from 4000 to 6000rpm.

Thanks so much to Richard-7 and Dave Coote for all the support. Dave is clearly the guru who has his finger on the pulse of these bikes and Richard's special tools and pictorial manuals made the journey doable.

Thanks also goes to Norton Canada. Peter Howes stepped up and came through with bearings and gaskets and paid for the crank.

No Thanks to Norton UK - no support or even any acknowledgement or ownership that these are their issues. Never once did I get a reply to any of my emails. Shameful.

Finally I have the bike of my dreams. It is a thing of beauty and performs accordingly now.

Congratulations.
Nice to see a happy ending and agree totally with sentiments concerning Norton UK.

I often tend to sympathise with big companies when folk complain that their email about the trivial blah-blah went ignored. They can’t answer every email, about everything, from everyone, every time !

But this is clearly NOT one of those cases.

To be so soundly ignored in this case is astonishing, and inexcusable.

@ Simon, we know you read this forum as you cut in on occasions, ie to ‘shut down’ the carbon fibre discussion.

How about you cut in here with an explanation...?

Jim, it's good to know that the vibration and other problems are fixable.
If one allowed 5 k$ to cover this cost, it isn't an insane amount to spend to make the thing work properly.
It is however a bizarre situation that an essentially new machine would require such a redo.
I guess the one area that will need long term testing to know it is fixed is the upper valve train and it's it's lubrication, or lack thereof.

An issue for an owner contemplating hiring a shop for this rebuilding process is finding one capable of getting it right. Most MC shops today employ techs who do service largely by electronic diagnosis and replacing sensors here and there. Not many engines get rebuilt, modern stuff tends to last and last.
I can't see the Tech at the local Yamaha/Triumph/ whatever shop successfully undertaking such a job. The ones I've encountered would probably put things back together in a similar state to that which Tech #58 accomplished.

Maybe Rob is the Man, Simon wont touch it .

I've been away for a few days but glad you had a reply. Rob is one of the most experienced people we have at Norton. Tough decision to take him out of production but he will add a level of experience and knowledge we have never had at the front end before, he was my go to guy with 961 issues internally.

Feel free to ask him all the hard questions I can't answer!

This quote cracks me up. Thank you pingu-nz.

I am glad I amuse you.

If my input isn't helpful I am happy to go do something else instead rather than spend my own personal time trying to support you guys.

Will Rob be chiming in to help Jim (and others) on this thread as he knows the most about these bikes and production issues?

That would be great. Cheers.

Hello Simon , We all appreciate your support. This forum is all many owners have to turn to for help !

Hi,

What is there to acknowledge on this thread? What started off as something that may be a helpful and interesting blueprinting thread (by bushmans own admittance) for everyone has degenerated into personals, mild threats about exposing issues from 2 people, saying we wont support a customer despite 45 years of spanner usage, spotty teenagers, zero support from Norton, claiming we wont supply you parts (of course we will, you know this - Peter was an official dealer, you are not so the terms are different) and then saying its personal and I don't like you.

No one is saying you didn't help Rich, but the reality is Canada hasn't had a bike for years and the game has changed.

Bearing all this in mind why would I (or any of the staff here) want to get involved in this nonsense?

Simon

It would be nice to know from someone on the front line if these issues are known or if there are any tips like “hey - i know its a little late but as of 2018 all balance shafts are now balanced. If you’re interested in getting one they fit all years and will help with vibration” type of things.

Will you be allowing Rob to chime in?

I think this forum and your customers would greatly appreciate this sort of positive interaction from Norton.
