BSA issues today

I bought this one about ten years ago. It's an old US design now made in China.
It's works fine and has sorted a few things out for me.

Yup, that's based on the Schumacher BT100. The Standard in most auto repair shops here forever.
Nick named, 'The Toaster.'
I have a BT100, just a little clumsy for motorcycle use due to it's size. Works great though.
Not sure why the price difference. Quite possibly come from the same factory. Certainly look the same in the pictures.

A little side drift, not until his passing did I put together that Don Schumacher of drag racing is/was the 'Schumacher' in
automotive battery products. He was born into it, but grew it to a 'Global' brand.
He sold the company years ago but was or at least his company was responsible for many patents.
Here's a link for those interested.
Just more useless info that floats around in my head. Now back to our regular, scheduled program...

I don't see why/how a smaller amp-hour battery can have an effect on charging voltage I am running a cigarette pack sized 2.5 ah battery with a Podtronics reg/Rectifier. Different from yours, I know, but charges fine. Sounds to me like a reg/Rectifier issue.

Thanks for that.

The new technology is amazing, no big draw, and scary accurate.

Well first let me say I got 140 miles on my A10 now and it’s running well. Rings have bed in, smoking stopped and brakes reasonably good. I have been dealing with 2 problems.

1) The other day I hit a huge pot hole. It’s bent/ bowed the chain guard in a bit and chain was rubbing. That never fitted very well and I have another chain guard on the way. Anyway I removed it for now. No rubbing. I must have damaged the main chain link as the chain came off miles from home, while out riding today. Easy fix. Called the mrs. And she bought me a new link to the middle of nowhere, rode home.

2) I have an Alton 12v generator and a yuasa 12v battery. The battery keeps going flat. Today I removed the battery and connect my meter to wires from rectifier. When revving I only get 8 VDC. So obviously something is wrong, I got a support email into Alton.

I can’t wait to sort out the issues above, it really is a pleasure to ride. Gearing is a bit long in the tooth, though,

Hi Jerry, I had a yuasa battery in my GL1000 goldwing it was a new lead acid , I filled it up and charged it , battery was ok for a while , but was then crap , I later learned your supposed to let the acid settle over night to get the air bubbles off the plates because it causes issues with that first charge , over heating plates etc , I fitted an AGM and it is fantastic now .

A quick update on my A10 teething issues.

- I fixed the charging issue and the rectifier Alton sent is now working. The problem was the amp meter. I bypassed it and it’s great now.

- I ordered a new chain-guard (made in Canada) had it powder coated it. Now no rubbing and it fits perfectly.

- I got the tacho back from Andy at vintage gauges ( he made it go the right way for my srm oil pump). It works perfectly.

I now have 180 miles on it. The rings appear to be bedding in, but still smoking a little bit. Today I opened it up to 60 mph and it’s smooth. At 60 I am doing 3500 revs. The speedo seems very accurate.

Overall I am super happy with it now. I will get it up to 500 miles and I think rings should be bedded in by then. If not I will fit new.

I will do a movie after the 500 mile mark, so you can all see what a pleasure this bike is to ride, for a 62 year old motorcycle,

Cheers
Jerry

Thanks for the update Jerry.
This gives me hope for smoother running with my A10. The dynamic crank balance that you had done is surely helping.

Take a good sized pillon for a ride , get it loaded a bit . Good to know your in charge now 😄 . Cheers

I thought I had a ring bedding issue with my A10. I later found out that I did not set the tension correctly with the cork under the timed breather. As soon as I fixed that, the smoking stopped. Unfortunately its a major pain to get to and check.
