My bike is your bike. I need new soft bags after touring Ontario all summer. So loaded up with wife and gear the soft bags drooped onto the mufflers and started to melt. I put 2 tin pie plates into the bottoms to stop this and they worked fine. But obviously I need new throw-over seat soft bags ... so.. suggestions ?
Looks like the link I posted to the ChaseHarper bags all those years ago have expired. Here is a current link;

While I was lamenting the fact that I had no cargo carrying capacity on my bike other than my jacket pockets, I saw Canadiannortonnut's commando with a hard bag mount and it inspired me to modify Givi hard cases for my commando. It's great to be able to take the bike on a beer run instead of the truck when the weather is nice. I like that the cases seal out any weather and are both, locked to the bike, and lockable. It's also quick and easy to unclip the bags to take them off when I want to sport ride the local twisties.

It wasn't very hard to modify the frames I bought to fit the commando.

I got quick detachable side bags from SW-Motech …..the Legend gear LC2 bags for their SCL-carrier system.
there is no plug and play stuff that I like....so I weld on brackets on the frame under the seat.
Another bracket in cross shape I welded onto the SLC-carrier.
The carrier is bolted to the frame bracket with 2 x M10 bolts.
Good stuff!
The bags are detached from the carriers in next to no time and the design of the bags is OK for me.
The little tank bag is from Iron and Resin (magnetic and with straps)….for cell phone, first-aid-kit, keys, passport etc...

Don't you think those carrier frames look ugly. You don't need them either. The standard sissy bar on my 850 is the rear support from my Oxford bags with the velcro straps. The front strap just sits on my seat. I wrap the remains of the strap from a ratchet tie down around the rear strap and sissy bar which keeps it rigid in position, but I can also rotate the whole bag sassy back over the sissy bar to get my seat off for inspection on a ride. Because i can fit weather proof covers over the bags as well, i do use bungy cords to help hold everything in place. When I get where I am going , everything comes of and keeps the bike looking as it should.

Warning to us other old buggers out there. Don't fit anything on your bike which stop's you getting your leg over [ shes not interested ] or you may be in a situation where you and you bike fall over at a gas station. The sissy bar is the max height for me. I just cant imagine trying to get my leg over the tank without grinding my heels on it.

BTW. The front strap is not uncomfortable to sit on.
