961 - Heavy Misfire - the full kangaroo

I ran out of 10A fuses so the fun was curtailed this evening. I'll get more fuses and restart tomorrow evening.

I will look at the schematic when I can but does this fuse feed everything? Obviously the starter does not go through it but I'm assuming the starter solenoid does so it must be the solenoid that's blowing the fuse or is there anything else that gets powered while cranking which could blow it? Wouldn't think so but is it possible to disconnect the solenoid then press the starter just to make sure.

Am I understanding this correctly? So it warms up at tickover then you open the throttle and it cuts out. When you close the throttle it doesn't tick over it just stops and your spark indicator shows no spark.

10 A fuse (G to W) wires feeds : Coil Pack , INJ1 , INJ 2 , and Cam Sensor . Have you changed the cam sensor yet ? Those have caused problems in the past . There are Bosch replacements for those too. And I would keep the Bosch Coil pack also ,and use it.

If the head temp sensor plays up engine will crank but no spark at plugs. This has been discussed previously and has happened to me. Cheap bosh part. If you search head temp sensor you’ll find the correct part no.

Cheap FAKE Bosch part is the issue. Real Bosch part is okay but still sensitive to damage from twisting it. Its not Bosch’s fault though. This sensor is designed to be in a more protected area and not out in the open.

Today was a little bit of a turning point for me. I was Checking out the wiring, the engine was refusing to fire. I looked down to see the air box half full of fuel. An injector must have stuck open and flooded the engine. Luckily, the engine had refused to crank by this stage. By that I mean nothing was happening when I pushed the starter button. Even turning the ignition off and on did not restore the use of the starter. I removed spark plugs and pushed the bike around in gear to expel the petrol from the cylinders. Could have hydro locked.

I think that I am chasing an ever developing problem. The fault is always around misfiring in some guise but the behavior changes. I think it is time to return the bike under its warrantee and get a refund. Or to put it another way, I am defeated.

Can I give my thanks to all on the forum for their help and also to Rob Jameson in Norton. Incidentally, Rob was happy to search out the issue for me but if I have to trailer 200 miles it might as well go back to the dealer who flogged me the bike in the first place. They can fund a replacement ecu.

I think I'll light a candle for you at Our Lady of Lourdes.

All things considered I don't think anyone can fault you for feeling that way.
If I was having those problems I would have packed it in long ago.
It's too bad because when the 961 is finally sorted, it's a fantastic ride.

Best of luck.

Anyone mention the Regulator/Rectifier? These can act up when they get hot. Not that I've experienced it on the 961 but most air cooled Ducati Sportclassics are on their second unit. Symptoms are very similar to crank position sensor failure and sudden power failure.

The problem is, I suspect that I have multiple interacting faults and/or a dodgy ECU. Without more sophisticated diagnostics I don't think I will be able to fix it. This one can go back and I'll hunt out a much more recent model. Rob recommends a 2016 Mk2 (no ABS and less restricted) or a very, very recent Euro 4 one. I shall be looking for one with the loud exhaust as well. I love the bike and will trade in one of my existing "herd" to buy a recent one. I suspect the Ninja 636 will go since I am getting a bit long in the tooth to pretend that I am Valentino Rossi.

Anyone out there need a new speedo? I bought a new one but the shop wont pay for it so they are getting the old one back (broken fixings). The new one cost me £250. Any reasonable offer considered. It has about 50 miles on it so Norton can't take it back. I live near Basingstoke in the South of England. I also have a new Bosch ignition coil for sale (cost me £50). Again, any reasonable offer. . .

Sorry to hear your tale of woe Terry. You have fought this better and for longer than most would have mate, especially me!

FWIW I would support the recommendation of the latest possible Euro 4 model. It seems that on the whole, the later the better applies to these bikes. Quite a few on here have new Euro 4 models and whilst most have had minor niggles, big issues seem rare.

In fact, Anniversary models are still available new at some dealers and even Norton had one available according to a recent post, plus they’re coming up second hand, these represent a bargain when considering all of the options they have fitted.

I think I would come to the same conclusion at this point. I absolutely love riding my 2017 CR as often as I can and so far the handful of niggles are more than manageable for the fantastic riding experience. Keep us posted on progress and hope to see you soon on a 961 rideout.

That seems like a sound plan.

My dealer had a 961 owner with a 2014 SF that would simply not run properly either.
The owner was really infuriated by the multiple problems, and the dealer's inability to resolve them.
The dealer cooperated with the Factory to try and fix the issues.
Norton shipped new wiring harness/loom, new ECU, maps, even new throttle bodies, but nothing corrected the problems.
Ultimately, the owner threatened to "Lemon Law" the bike after months of aggravations.
To avoid the Lemon Law embarrassment the Factory agreed to buy back the bike from the owner at full purchase price.

So I know these things can happen - there are simply some bikes from hell.

I suspect the Ninja 636 will go since I am getting a bit long in the tooth to pretend that I am Valentino Rossi.

Seriously, Rossi is getting too long in the tooth to be acting like Rossi.:D
But it's nice to watch him show the kids a thing or two from time to time.

Hi Clive,
Can you give me details about ride outs. It wont be on a Norton but I have a nice 1200 Bonny that likes a good run.
Terry

My dad rode to texas and back TO NF on the 961 SE and then to Oregon then BC and back through Canada the following year on the 961. Then him and I rode to North Carolina each on 961’s with back packs tented for a week at the INOA2015 ashville. Thats when he had his accident. Lookup flickr.com/one07. Albums.
Good gravy! That’s a ton of riding!

Sorry that link didn’t work. Try this one. Yup. All good riding a Norton. My dad rides any nice day above 6 degrees C. I rode mine today. Started right up. No issues. topped up with fresh gas and went out for 3 hrs. Good day today. Test rode the Kawasaki 900rs yesterday. Man that thing is smooth compared to the 961. Handles great too. Not as nice parts but has the look and the price tag is super fair.

Here’s my dads flickr account
