A leaky head gasket can sometimes manifest itself with a high-pitched squeak or whistle.
Hi.
Yes i understand .
I have a copper head gasket mounted.
But from head/barrels there is no oil leak.
Barrells top and head were plain skimmed.
A leaky air without oil?
Thanks
Piero

Just a wild guess is all, but a leak-down test will confirm or deny. I don't think they have to leak at the pushrod tubes or oil drain hole necessarily. Seems like a bit of oil would slow or stop a leak to a certain extent.

Hi Danno.
Thank you.
What and where i must indagate better?.
Leak test: please what is the way to do it?.
Piero

A rig like this and an air compressor. Pistons at TDC gauges connected to spark plug hole and compressor. Actually you could just connect pressurized air to the plug hole and listen around for the whistle. If you hear none, good news, it's something less complicated than the engine top end.

Maybe a crack in carb/filter rubber pleated boots which occurs deep in valley so unseen and stays sealed until rpm increases the intake draw through to allow the slit to vibrate sonically?

Hi .
You had right.
With compressor from one spark plug hole with TDC pistons air go out from left side of head gasket.
But without whistle.
Gasket is an well anealed copper mounted without glue as always i do without leaks and all the studs/bolts are well tight.
I know that thus barrells are not good to tight because gas elicoids inserts that go up and turn into the base.
What i can do.
Thank uou
Piero

A fire-ring composite head gasket might solve the problem .
I had leakage with various copper head gaskets for years. I got quite skilled at taking the head off and refitting. Never quite fixed the leakage though.

Eventually I tried the composite type and that sealed perfectly right off.
It has stayed sealed and dry for ten years now.

Good you figured it out. An innocuous whistle could turn into a burnt valve pretty quickly. The SS clone has a copper head gasket but I used a flame-ring on the Titanic, Next time I have to open up the former, I will replace the copper with composite.

Well, +1 on composite gaskets from me. I’ve only ever used composite on my Cdo and never had the slightest weep.

But, this is for a Dunstal 810cc job. I’ve never seen one, but isn’t it going to be a near 850 bore with a 750 stud pattern? Do composite gaskets exist for them?

Cometic will make you what ever you need in a composite or copper gasket and various thicknesses. If they don’t have it on file send them a sample or good specs and they will make it for you. The price is probably no more than a standard gasket. They do need lead time if they don’t have it on the shelf.

I was under the impression that they’d supply any copper gasket to pattern, but that composite ones would require a significant order quantity.

If I’m wrong, I’ll be delighted as I’d definitely like the option of a composite 920 gasket.

Nigel,
Just got off the phone with them. They will do one off if that’s all you need. I forgot to ask about price, but they didn’t mention anything about that either. They just need the specifications.
Pete

EDIT .043”-.059” thick. Depending on bore size.

That’s great news! Thanks for that, I’ll contact them and see what they can do!

Hope it works out for you. I keep meaning to ask them about valve cover gaskets but always forget.
If you have a problem getting them shipped to the UK. PM me and we can work something out.
Pete

I bought a complete A10 paper gasket set on eBay ($75) and had it delivered to Cometic.
They duplicated the set in their rubberized aluminium type for $150.
The only one I did not do was the head gasket. The one in the eBay set was good for that.
Anyway, reasonable prices for a quality product.
I can't get the fellows on the A10 site interested tho. They think Cometic gaskets are something to do with Women's cosmetics. No saleo_O
