But, my copper wires just turn brown.

Wires will go Green , brown, black, same process - life is fun just look at the colour of the Stature of Liberty!

Yeah, I agree that the intake filter does provide fuel arresting properties, so your test method is safer. I would add that do NOT use starting fluid/either ever unless it's on a lawnmower you care very little about, and even then take it outside away from any buildings.

I once used either to start a riding lawnmower and it backfired and burst into flames... I ran and grabbed the fire extinquisher that I keep by the woodstove, hauled back outside and put the flames out.... Then I went and changed my drawers....
