Hello all. My question is can a 4s cam be timed as per the workshop manual ie counting the links of the chain or does it need to be more precise? Opinions please Cheers Ian

Yes it can be timed the same. It will probably be fine. But you’re at the mercy of the cam grinders quality control, so checking is needed IF you want to be 100% sure it’s cock on.

Plus one on what Nigel said.

I have never met a cam for any vehicle that didn't work fine on a street ride clocked straight up dot to dot as described in a service manual. You can definitely go to the trouble of checking it, but it usually doesn't add up to a good use of time unless trying to break a land speed record. Or you just like to do that kind of thing. Others may disagree and say it is crucial, but my experience says not so much.
